Peer tutoring is when students tutor each other. The tutor is usually a little older and has already studied the material that he tutors on. It is an excellent system that can provide some really good results and be beneficial to all those involved. Those who do the tutoring benefit at least as much, if not more, than those doing the tutoring. Even the teachers benefit by not having to spend as much time with individual students and being able to spend more time teaching the class as a whole.
Those students doing the tutoring can benefit from it in several ways. They can help their own understanding of the material. They must go over the material to prepare for the tutoring and then again as they are helping the other student understand it. The tutor is able to develop leadership skills, confidence, and a sense of responsibility. Even though the tutor is being supervised in his actions, it is still his responsibility to accomplish the goals of teaching the material to someone else. Success in this aspiration brings with it not only confidence but a much better understanding of the teacher's role and in turn can make the tutor a better student.
Those being tutored can also benefit greatly from peer tutoring. Someone who is having trouble with the material and is in need of help is going to feel much more comfortable around someone close to their own age and will be able to concentrate better. This will allow them to ask more questions without fear of ridicule and in the end to come to a better understanding of the material.
As someone who has recently mastered the material, the tutor may be able to pass on little tips and tricks that helped him understand the material better and will be better able to explain the material in a language that the student can understand. There is no pressure to impress as there usually is when an adult is involved in the tutoring.
Peer tutoring is a process that works for all involved. The student is better able to learn the material from someone that he can relate to. The tutor learns to improve skills that he will need later in life. And the teacher is freed up to spend more time with those students who need her direct attention. Jeff Conaway, who starred in the sitcom Taxi, played swaggering Kenickie in the movie musical Grease and publicly battled drug and alcohol addiction on Celebrity Rehab, died Friday. He was 60.
The actor was taken off life support Thursday at Encino Tarzana Medical Center, according to one of his managers, Kathryn Boole. He was taken there unconscious on May 11 and placed in a medically induced coma.
Conaway had been treating himself with pain pills and cold medicine while in a weakened condition, said Phil Brock, his other manager.
"He's a gentle soul with a good heart ... but he's never been able to exorcise his demons," Brock said after Conaway was hospitalized.
The actor had acknowledged his addictive tendencies in a 1985 interview with The Associated Press, when he described turning his back on the dream of a pop music career. He'd played guitar in a 1960s band called 3 1/2 that was the opening act for groups including Herman's Hermits, the Young Rascals and the Animals.
"I thought, 'If I stay in this business, I'll be dead in a year.' There were drugs all over the place, and people were doing them. I had started to do them. I realized that I'd die," Conaway told the AP.
His effort to avoid addiction failed, and his battles with cocaine and other substances were painfully shared on Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew, the VH1 series with TV and radio personality Dr. Drew Pinsky. Conaway, who'd had back surgery, blamed his cocaine use and pain pill abuse in part on lingering pain.
Conaway was born in New York City on Oct. 5, 1950, to parents who were in show business. His father was an actor, producer and agent, and his mother was an actress.
He made his Broadway debut in 1960 at the age of 10 in the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama All the Way Home. By then his parents were divorced, and Conaway had spent a great deal of time with his grandparents who lived in the Astoria section of Queens.
"I used to hold in a lot of feelings. I'd smile a lot but I was really miserable. I didn't know it at the time, but I've figured it out since. When I was on stage, I could make people laugh," he said in 1985.
He toured in the national company of the comedy Critic's Choice, then attended a professional high school for young actors, musicians and singers. After abandoning music, he returned to acting with a two-year stint in Grease, on Broadway (playing the lead role of Danny Zuko at one point) and eventually with the touring company.
The musical about high-school love brought Conaway to Los Angeles and television, including a small part on Happy Days that led to larger roles. He had roles in small films and then in the movie version of Grease (1978), although he lost the top-billed part to John Travolta.
In 1978, he won the Taxi job that put him in the company of Judd Hirsch, Danny de Vito and Andy Kaufman in what proved to be a hit for ABC.
The tall, gangly actor, with a shock of blond hair and what the late longtime AP drama critic Michael Kuchwara called a "wide-angle smile" and "a television face, just right for popular consumption," appeared a success.

But Conaway, who received two Golden Globe nominations for Taxi, said he tired early of being a series regular, although he stayed with the series for three years, until 1981 (Taxi ended in 1983 after moving to NBC the year before).
"I got very depressed. Hollywood can be a terrible place when you're depressed. The pits. I decided I had to change my life and do different things," he said.
His movie career failed to ignite, however, and Conaway shifted back to TV with the short-lived 1983 fantasy series Wizards and Warriors, and the 1985 flop Berrengers, a drama set in a New York department store. He made a bid to return to Broadway in The News, but the rock musical about tabloid journalism closed within days.
A 1994-98 stint in the sci-fi TV series Babylon 5 as security chief Zack Allan proved successful, but it was followed by only scattered roles on stage, in films and TV shows. He was in the reality series Celebrity Fit Club in 2006 and then in Celebrity Rehab, in which the frail Conaway used a wheelchair and blacked out on camera.
A fall in 2010 caused a broken hip and other injuries that left him in more precarious health.
Conaway told the Los Angeles Times in a January 2011 article that series producers asked him to "give them drama." But he also said he welcomed the support he received from those who viewed his struggle.
"I got a lot of love from people, and when people stop me on the street and say, 'Man, your story touched me so much,' it just makes all this pain worthwhile, you know?" he said. "I don't know where actors go after they die, but I know people who help other people have a nice place to go. And I would like to go there if I can."
Conaway was wed twice, first to Kerri Young and then to Rona Newton-John, sister of pop star Olivia Newton-John. Both marriages ended in divorce.

There are numerous crime shows filling the prime time slots. And you can find some version of Law and Order, CSI etc. on at any time of day on a number of channels. The writers are increasingly creative and have a tireless supply of inspiration from real life events that they can put various spins on. The actors are dedicated and the directors are creating stories that are engaging and elicit emotional responses.
I know that personally they are my favorite thing to tune in to when I watch television. I watch a complicated crime unfold and the story develop around it until the criminals minimal error is exposed and the perp is collared! Usually this error is exposed by using a combination of a mastermind underpaid detective and the limitless resources of forensic science. I have often feared that this information may be misinterpreted by some as instruction. The program lays out how to commit the crime, what errors to avoid and if arrested how to see your trial through to acquittal.
The truth of the matter is that the numerous crime shows and frequency with which they air are in fact having an effect on real-world expectations. This effect has earned its own buzz phrase named the ?CSI Effect? which is also referred to as the ?CSI Syndrome?. This effect is described as the viewing of crime shows raising victims and jury members expectation of forensic science. The television writers can overstate the accuracy of forensic techniques as well as exaggerate the ability of forensic science. The expectations of crime scene investigation and DNA testing are especially affected. Prosecutors are being pressured to present more forensic evidence in court. Potential jurors are sometimes asked if they are viewers of Forensic Crime shows as this trend is being considered.

In a similar vein, there are findings that suggest that forensic science shows help criminals cover their tracks. According to Joshua Marquis, an Oregon prosecutor, ?It?s not uncommon for criminals to now bring bleach with them to sanitize the crime scene.? Criminals are learning what not to leave behind at crime scenes and getting much better at covering their tracks. Crime show effects on criminals can also be looked at on a flip side which is much more positive. It is likely that the message being conveyed to many is that no matter how they try to cover their crime, forensic science will reveal their identity.
Whether we look at the positive or negative effects on the criminal, victim or juror, the cultivation theory is supported by any one of the findings. The cultivation theory holds that television cultivates a distorted world view in which one?s perception of social reality resembles the reality portrayed in the television program. When looking at crime shows, the cultivation theory would say that the impact on an individual would be the tendency to overestimate the rate of violent crime or the prevalence of law enforcement officials.
We are exposed to a plethora of crime shows. The writers are increasingly creative and have a tireless supply of inspiration from real life events. And it seems that life events are being equally affected by the shows themselves! The emotional responses that these shows tend to elicit are carried over into our views, opinions and expectations of real life scenarios.

Editor?s note: Some dissident Syrian soldiers ordered to violently suppress pro-democracy protests have been risking their lives to secretly shoot and upload video of the deadly clashes. The author of this article recently met with several soldiers in a Damascus suburb.

DAMASCUS, Syria ? Osama is 22 years old, green-eyed and short-haired, and loves wearing casual jeans and colored graffiti T-shirts. He is a soldier serving the Syrian army, but sometimes he leaves his uniform at the military base and bribes his chief officer, to take a day off.
He recently traveled here to go hunting for a brand-new video-equipped smartphone in Bahtha, the tech district of the Syrian capital where you can find every sort of electronics at a bargain price.
?They told me that Israel had occupied Daraa, and some people there were siding with Zionism against our president, so we had to go and liberate the city,? he says. But ?there was no Israeli occupation there. We were actually occupying the city, there was nobody else?.
Like Osama, Ahmed, Rami and Mansour are soldiers in their 20s. They are here on their day off after a recent military action in [warning: links to graphic video] Izraa to meet with a tech-savvy friend and hand over graphic footage they shot inside a hospital immediately after a bloody clash with protesters.
The friend, who coordinates teams of so-called video soldiers with a satellite link from a suburban flat, takes their full flash cards and gives them back empty ones. In the past weeks, he has been uploading and circulating the mobile camera shots from Ahmed, Rami, Mansour and others on a number of video-sharing web platforms and on major TV channels.
?I decided to start filming and documenting the truth when I realized the amount of lies we are forced to believe at the army,? says Rami, echoing other soldiers interviews by Wired.com here who say they are determined to bear witness to the violence, despite the personal cost.
After more than two months of unrest and 850 confirmed deaths, the Syrian uprising has reached a new crisis point. On Thursday, U.S. President Barack Obama made his first public address dedicated to the Middle East uprisings that started last December in Tunis, then spread to Egypt and many other Arab countries.
it was the first time Syria was mentioned publicly by Obama, who made it clear that the U.S. will stand with the people?s legitimate demands for freedom. He has called upon the Syrian President Bashar al Asad to adopt a serious program of reforms, or leave.
But, as has already been the case in Tunisia and Egypt, the most important factor in determining the final outcome will be the position of the national army.
So far the Syrian military has not sided with the protesters, but some people ? such as the soldiers drawn to the secret suburban flat here to bear witness to the violence ? believe it is just a matter of time.
Slogans like ?Syrian people and the army are one? are being heard at the demonstrations all over Syria. Protesters have been singing the national anthem, which highly praises the military.
People serving in the army are just ordinary Syrians, and for the first time many of them have been confronted with the dilemma of shooting at other fellow Syrians for reasons that are still unclear.
Military service is compulsory in Syria, and lasts almost two years. When called on duty, young Syrians have to go, unless they are the only male child in a family or unless they have had the privilege of living abroad for more than 5 years, in which case they can pay and clear their obligations towards the Syrian state. In 2010, army regulars were estimated at 220,000 troops, with an additional 300,000 in reserve.
Osama, Ahmed, Rami and Mansour are united in their criticism of the government, but they have very different personal stories, family backgrounds, social classes and religious beliefs.
Before joining the army, Rami was a journalist, Ahmed had a shop, and Mansour was trying to study at the university ? without much success. Osama answers with a silent smile when asked about it: He was probably doing something illegal, and that?s how he has learned the ?casual bribe? in order to obtain favors, even in the army.
?There are many people inside the army who think that what?s going on it?s wrong,? says Mansour. ?They are still silent, but who knows in the future how they will react.?
Business day is over in Damascus, and Osama is done with his shopping. He is ready to go back to the military base, with a brand new smartphone in his hands.
?This will be my weapon,? he says and, smiling again, adds: ?Maybe one day, when this is over, I will throw my gun away and become a video reporter. Inshallah.?

If You Purchase a Kindle Will You Like It - My Very Non Geeky Kindle Review
When I was ready to purchase a Kindle, I tried to find useful reviews but they all tended to be too technical and didn't really help me, so here is my totally non tech Kindle review after having used my Kindle for a while.
These are what I think are the good points:
1. Is a Kindle nice to hold? The Kindle is lightweight and balances easily in the hand. You can choose to read with it upright or horizontal. I tried both ways and like it upright.
2. Is it hard on your eyes? It has a special screen which means it is not like looking at a computer screen and so is not tiring on my eyes. There is no glare even in full sun.
3. Turning pages: Pages are really easy to turn and it is just as quick as turning a real book's pages.
4. Reading in bed! Perfect while reading in bed, the Kindle can be balanced on your duvet and you don't have to use two hands to hold the pages open, this is a terrific plus for me, I can really snuggle in.
5. Getting Kindle Books If I don't have a book to read, I feel edgy. Now I don't have that feeling because there are hundreds of books always available to me NOW.
6. Cost of Kindle Books Kindle books are inexpensive, certainly a lot less than a normal book and are downloaded in minutes. Kindle is ready connected to Amazon and your chosen payment method (only when you switch on the wireless or tell it to connect that is) so you don't have to have credit cards etc. to hand in order to purchase a book, just click and connect. Make sure you put on a password just in case.
7. Free Books on Kindle? Yes there are hundreds, whether you will want to read them is another matter. Many are termed Classics and they don't interest me, maybe you will like some of them.
8. Do I have to pay for Broadband? No, it doesn't cost you anything for the wireless broadband, just find a wireless hotspot and switch on.
9. Can I see a book before I buy it? Instead of flipping through a book at a bookshop when trying to decide if you might like it, you can download the first chapter of any Kindle book, this is totally free and I use it a lot. It saves on mistakes.
10. Carrying it about: I never go anywhere without a book and usually have two or three in my bag, they weigh a ton so having a Kindle saves me all that, especially when travelling. I would highly recommend a carrying case for it though, it is quite tough but why take chances?
11. Battery life? The battery life is amazing, it gives about 3 weeks reading if you turn the wireless connection off, which I recommend that you do. Mine is always turned off except for actually choosing or buying a book, it doesn't have to be connected for you to read your books. Battery lasts about 10 days if you leave wireless switched on but why would you do that?
12. Is recharging the battery easy? Yes very easy. My 3G Wi Fi version just plugs into an electric point, no computer needed. Not sure about the cheaper one, might have to charge it via your computer.
13. What is Text to Voice? You can turn on the Text to Voice option and someone will read the book to you. I like the man's voice, the woman sounds a bit stilted. Useful when you are doing something else at the same time, cooking for instance.
14. Keep your books organized: This is much easier than keeping your bookshelves organized for sure. You add whatever file categories you want and move books about with a few clicks.
What I like to do is keep new books on the main menu until I have read them, then move them into a category.
I have: Travel, Historical, Thrillers, Favourites, Biography at the moment, you can have as many as you like.
15. Finding your place: This is easy, as Kindle remembers where you were when you stopped reading, even if you read several books at once as I do. Just switch on and select your book then you will be on the correct page to continue.
16. What does the text look like? What do you want it to look like! It is so easy to change the text size and look, I dislike wearing glasses when reading in bed so I just increase the size of text until I can see it well. You can also change word spacing, line spacing and the font if you don't like the default one.
17. What happens to my books if Kindle goes wrong? Amazon keeps a copy of every book you buy, so if anything did happen to your Kindle, you can just download them once more, no cost involved.
18. Can I send emails etc.with it? Not really, you can send documents and PDFs to your Kindle email but I haven't used it for that myself.
These are the things I do not much like about my Kindle:
1. It is rather too easy to turn pages over This is good but I keep accidentally doing it. I have to be careful not to press the button, soon got used to it though and it is not a problem now.
2. Using a password This is a good idea, but unlike other passwords, as I type it in, anyone standing by me could see what it is, I wonder if Kindle realize this? Perhaps I should tell them.
3. I buy too many books now!
Being rather aware that the bad points are a bit brief, I did a spot of customer research while walking along a beach in Cyprus today. ?An eruption at Grimsvoetn has started and there?s an airplane on its way there now to investigate further,? Haraldur Eirkisson of the office told AFP.
?There was a cloud rising up from Grimsvoetn around 1900 GMT and at just before 2000 GMT it had reached an altitude of 11 kilometres (6.8 miles),? he added.
Grimsvoetn is Iceland?s most active volcano, having erupted nine times between 1922 and 2004. It lies beneath the Vatnajoekull glacier in the southeast of the North Atlantic island nation.
The eruption in April last year of Iceland?s Eyjafjoell volcano, southwest of Grimsvoetn, shut down large swathes of European airspace for almost a month amid fears the volcanic ash could wreak havoc on aircraft engines.
No two volcanic eruptions are the same, and it remained unclear late Saturday if the new eruption threatened to emit a similar kind of ash ? fine, with very sharp particles ? like the massive plume that burst from Eyjafjoell.
The problem with last year?s eruption, according to the researchers, was that it happened under a glacier, bursting through 200-300 metres (yards) of ice.
It was the ?interaction between the cold water and the hot magma that made the particles really tiny,? and therefore especially dangerous to aircraft, Susan Stipp, a professor at the Nano-Science Centre at the University of Copenhagen, told AFP late last month.
Grimsvoetn is however also located under a glacier, in an enormous, eight-kilometre diameter caldera ? a collapsed volcanic crater ? near the centre of the Vatnajoekull icefield.
When it last erupted in November 2004, volcanic ash fell as far away as mainland Europe and caused some disruptions in flights to and from Iceland.
Geologists had worried late last year the volcano was about to blow when they noticed a large river run caused by rapidly melting glacier ice.
Eruptions at Grimsvoetn traditionally result in massive flooding, although this has little impact since the surrounding areas are uninhabited.
