The movers and shakers of Asian tourism gathered at the Shangri-La Singapore earlier this month to celebrate Travel + Leisure?s World Best Awards 2011, the definitive list of top hotels, airlines, cities and islands. Travel + Leisure editor-in-chief Nancy Novogrod flew in from New York to attend the event and congratulate the increasing number of winners from around Asia. Both Travel + Leisure and Shangri-La Hotels are celebrating their 40th anniversaries this year. Also in attendance was Rasina Uberoi, the publishing director of Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, who introduced Christopher Kucway as the new editor-in-chief of the Southeast Asia edition. The evening was also a chance to highlight the ongoing work of Sala Bai Hotel & Restaurant School, a group supported by Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia. Emmanuelle Dethomas of Sala Bai and Sam McGoun of American Express explained the role of the school in training young Cambodians from underprivileged families in an effort to fight poverty and human trafficking.
