CHAPEL HILL: The south?s oldest improvisational theater marks the return to the academic year by going ?Way Back to School? on Friday, Sept. 9, at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro. This one-time-only Transactors Improv performance will be set at a fictional high school during the 1996-97 academic year.

Completely made up on the spot and based on audience suggestions, ?Way Back to School? will explore the school experience from the perspective of students, teachers, parents, family members, and more?all during the school year of 15 years ago.

?When you actually remember what was going on back then, it?s hard to believe it was 15 years ago,? says director Dan Sipp. ?The Triangle was dealing with Hurricane Fran. There was the bombing at the Atlanta Olympics. Tiger Woods was named Rookie of the Year. Princess Di and Prince Charles had just gotten divorced. And remember this was before every high schooler had a cell phone and was texting 30 times a day. Our goal is to give a fresh spin on the past.?

The cast for ?Way Back to School? includes Anoo Brod, Greg Hohn, Nancy Pekar, Sipp, Steven Warnock, and Annie Zipper. Mike Beard provides lighting and sound effects.

Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $14 in advance or $16 day-of ($12 for ArtsClub Members); students/seniors are $7 in advance or $9 day-of. The ArtsCenter is located at 300-G E. Main St. in Carrboro. Call (919) 929-2787 or visit www.artscenterlive.org for tickets and directions.
