BOZEMAN, Mont. -- For the second year in a row, Chris Acosta is an RMISA/NCAA West Regionals champion as the Lobo senior won today's giant slalom event in Bozeman, Mont. Acosta, a native of Ashland, Wisc., won the slalom at last year's Regionals. It's his second victory in 2013 and his third of his career.

The Lobos moved up one spot and sit in fifth after the second day of competition. New Mexico has 523 points and sits ahead of Alaska-Anchorage, who has 477.

Colorado leads all teams with 711 points, Utah is second with 625 and Denver is third with 616. Montana State sits within reach of the Lobos in fourth with 550 points.

"I am very happy for Chris Acosta who had an awesome race today," head coach Fredrik Landstedt said. "It was a little bit better day for the Nordics and we had some other great results for the Alpine team."

Nordic events concluded on Saturday with a 15/20K mass-start freestyle race. The RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regionals conclude tomorrow with the slalom.

Alpine - Giant Slalom

Acosta propelled a second-place finish by the Lobo men in the giant slalom. UNM's women finished third and collectively, New Mexico was second in the giant slalom.

Michael Bansmer was the Lobos' second point placer as he finished seventh. The sophomore had the fastest time of the field for the second run.

Sean Horner was next and finished 18th. Joonas Rasanen, Mark Miller and Juho-Pekka Penttinen also raced and placed 20th, 21st and 30th, respectively.

Sophomore Mateja Robnik led the Lobo women and earned her first podium finish in RMISA competition as she finished third. Seniors Kate Williams and Mary Rachel Hostetter placed 11th and 18th to round out UNM's scoring.

Freshman Courtney Altringer finished 25th.

Nordic - 15/20K Mass-Start Freestyle

Mats Rudin Resaland led all Nordic Lobos on Saturday as he placed sixth in the men's 20K mass-start freestyle. The sophomore finished the course in 59:21.1.

Junior Christian Otto and senior Eivind Odden Solberg were the other two Lobos that competed. Otto placed 22nd (1:03:07.5) and Solberg finished 27th (1:09:29.6).

Sophomore Clara Chauvet led the Nordic Lobo women with an 11th-place finish, completing the 15K mass-start freestyle in 53:23.9. Senior Linn Havelsrud Klaesson was 14th (54:46.6) and junior Anita Kirvesniemi was 23rd (57:39.3) to round out UNM's scoring. Senior Ingrid Leask finished the course in 1:00:08.2 and placed 26th.

"Mats had a real shot at the podium but fell one kilometer from the finish," Landstedt said. "Clara finished in ninth but got a 15 second penalty for skiing out of the trail for a few yards and was moved down to 11th. She skied a good race, and Linn also had a better race today."
