Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce after five years of marriage, People Magazine is reporting.

"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Holmes's attorney Jonathan Wolfe told the magazine. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Daughter Suri is 6. Cruise, 49,?and Holmes, 33, wed in?the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle outside of Rome?in 2006. He had proposed at the Eiffel Tower.

Cruise drew media headlines in May 2005 when he declared his love for Holmes and famously jumped on a couch on the set of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

Early in their courtship, Holmes revealed that Cruise was her first?celebrity crush, and she?started pining away for him in 1983 when she was four years old and saw him in ?Risky Business."

Cruise was married twice before, to actresses Nicole Kidman and Mimi Rogers. It was Holmes' first marriage.

Cruise will turn 50 on July 3.

Six members of China's Uighur minority tried to hijack a plane flying from a restive city in the far-western Xinjiang region on Friday but crew members and passengers thwarted them, authorities said.

The plane returned safely to the airport in Hotan city -- which has seen a spate of violent clashes between mainly Muslim Uighurs and police due to simmering ethnic tensions -- and the suspects were detained, authorities said.

"The six hijackers are Uighurs," Hou Hanmin, a spokeswoman for the government of Xinjiang told AFP.

"For the moment, we don't know the purpose of the hijack. It's still under investigation," she said, adding at least seven crew members and passengers had been injured in the incident.

Two security personnel were also seriously injured, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The aircraft took off at 12:25 pm (0425 GMT) from Hotan, then 10 minutes into the flight the six suspects tried to "violently hijack" the plane, according to tianshannet.com, the Xinjiang government's news website.

But crew members and passengers soon brought them under control and the aircraft returned to the city, the website said.

The plane -- which belongs to Tianjin Airlines, according to Xinhua -- had been bound for the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi, it added without providing further details.

Xinjiang is home to around nine million Uighurs, many of whom complain of religious and cultural repression by Chinese authorities -- a claim the government denies -- and the region is regularly hit by unrest.

The exiled World Uyghur Congress (WUC) disputed the government version of events, claiming that a fight over seating broke out onboard the aircraft between a group of Uighurs and Han Chinese, who vastly outnumbered them.

"The Uighurs of Hotan believe that this story about taking hostages is a lie," Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the organisation told AFP.

"We call on the international community to demand an inquiry. The Uighurs of Hotan believe the government is taking advantage of this incident to reinforce repression," he added.

Exiled Uighurs have accused authorities of launching a crackdown ahead of the anniversary of deadly July 2009 clashes between Uighurs and Han Chinese in Urumqi, among the most violent ethnic unrest in China in recent years.

Earlier this month, 12 children were injured when police raided an Islamic school in Hotan, amid the crackdown that has also targeted "illegal" religious activities.

Police said they descended on an "illegal religious study centre" on June 6 to free children being held there when criminal suspects "ignited a flammable explosive device".

They said officers had to fight to put out the fire, and 12 children suffering from burns were sent to hospital. Authorities have since launched house-to-house searches in the city.

The WUC, however,cited sources on the ground as saying police tossed tear gas into the school and caused the confrontation.

In July last year, at least 20 people -- including Uighur protesters -- were killed in Hotan in a clash with police.

State media quoted an official in the region as saying the clash was a "terrorist" attack and said four people including a police officer were killed when a crowd set upon a police station in the remote city.

But Uighur activists called it an outburst of anger by ordinary members of the minority, and accused authorities of attempting to block information on the deadly incident.

Xinjiang, a vast resource-rich region that borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been under heavy security since the July 2009 ethnic riots.

Rights groups say the violence in the region stems from long-held grievances among Uighurs, who complain of decades of repressive rule by Beijing and say an influx of Han is eroding their culture.

The government, however, says it has provided much-needed development to the region, and blames much of the violence there on what it calls the three "evil forces" of religious extremism, separatism and terrorism.

Facebook hasn't enabled any apps to publish Wants yet."

So, is Facebook currently testing a "Want" button? Only the company knows for sure. But this little datamined nugget seems to suggest that the social network is itching to?give retailers a hand in better connecting you with the products they sell.

The Nobel Laureate?s recent winning of a seat in Myanmar's Army-dominated parliament and current high-profile European tour are being taken as further signs that the government is maintaining its reform drive.

But there are other signals that the country is changing for the better. And with those changes come new items on the visiting journalist's to-do checklist.

Over the past year, the Me N Ma Girls (hoping there's no need to explain the obvious pun on the country's name), a pop/dance act made up of five young Myanmar singers and dancers, have appeared frequently in the international media.

?We appreciate all the media who interview us,? says Ah Moon, a 21-year-old singer and dancer from war-torn Kachin state in the country's north. She recently finished a Russian language degree and speaks fluent English with an Americanized twang.

Successive stories have branded the ladies as emblems of cultural change and taboo-lifting in what was one of the world's most oppressive political regimes. The girls, perhaps wise beyond their years, seem wary of being typecast as some sort of cultural fable or clich?, rather than aspiring pop superstars in their own right.

?Yeah, we've been in a lot of articles, it's been great,? says Kimi, 24, an ethnic Chin from the northwest of Myanmar. ?But, sometimes it's like 'can we practice now?'" the girls say, feigning good-humored weariness, while gathered around a laptop in Ah Moon's family apartment in Yangon.?

In between pouting and posing for photos, and gossiping in Myanmar language, the girls peer over the shoulder of band member Htike Htike, a graphic designer in her spare time, while she works on a new album cover design. "I did the cover for our first album," she says.

The pay-off from all the coverage is a chance to go to Los Angeles later this year to record some tracks for the new album and take a shot at making that apparent quantum leap that has so far been too much for most Asian pop acts trying to break into Western markets.

?It has been very hard for Asian acts to score in the West, but they have a chance because the story is compelling, they look great, and have the right disposition for success,? says Daniel Hubbert, Chairman/CEO of Powermusic, in an e-mail.

When the girls head stateside, they'll record at Mr. Hubbert's studio. Musically, he says, ?I would categorize the girls as a pop/dance act, musically akin to a Pussy Cat Dolls.?

If that's the case, then the Me N Ma Girls have as good a shot as anyone at making the East-West leap.

After all, Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, possibly the most famous Myanmar citizen, has been described as an ideal link between East and West, an Asian Buddhist speaking the Queen's English and the language of democracy and rule of law and who raised a family in Britain.

?She is like another mother for us,? says Cha Cha, 22, also an actress with 14 movies already released, speaking of Aung San Suu Kyi.

The country's reformist President Thein Sein comes in for hearty praise too. Wai Hnin, the quietest of the five girls, chimes in. ?Thein Sein is amazing,? she says, ?everything is changing now here after the end of the military government.?

The girls aren't getting too big for their boots or forgetting their roots, however, despite their success to date and hopes for the future. "We don't try to be too sexy, or go too far from our culture," says Ah Moon, adding that "we all still love our traditional dress."

WASHINGTON?? The U.S. economy slowed as expected in the first quarter, but a less robust pace of consumer spending and export growth than previously estimated could dampen the economic outlook for the current period.

Gross domestic product increased at a 1.9 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said in its final reading on Thursday, unchanged from its estimate last month. That was in line with economists' expectations.

However, when measured from the income side, the economy grew at a 3.1 percent pace in the first quarter, up from 2.6 percent in the previous quarter.

The tepid first-quarter pace of GDP growth was a step-down from the October-December period's 3.0 percent rate.

It also reflected a slightly less sturdy accumulation of inventories by businesses and slower pace of investment in equipment and software than previously estimated.

Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, increased at a 2.5 percent rate in first quarter, rather than the previously reported 2.7 percent pace.

There are signs that consumer spending slowed in the second quarter, with retail sales falling in April and May.

Business inventories increased $54.4 billion, instead of $57.7 billion, adding only 0.10 percentage point to GDP growth compared with 0.21 percentage point in the previous estimate.

Export growth rate slows
Excluding inventories, the economy grew at a revised 1.8 percent rate in the first quarter, rather than 1.7 percent and up from 1.1 percent in the fourth quarter.

Exports grew at a 4.2 percent rate instead of 7.2 percent.

While the careful of management of inventories could be a boost to second-quarter growth, the mild downward revision to consumer spending underscores the loss of momentum in the economy that has been evident in weak hiring and slowing factory activity.

Second-quarter growth is forecast around 2 percent, but with global demand cooling amid Europe's debt woes and an uncertain fiscal policy path at home forcing households to be cautious, even that estimate might be too optimistic.

Business spending on equipment and software was revised down to show a 3.5 percent growth rate instead of the previously reported 3.9 percent. Anecdotal evidence suggests the pace softened in the second quarter.

The drag from the revisions to consumer spending, equipment and software, exports and inventory accumulation was offset by upward revisions to investment in residential and nonresidential structures.

Import growth was lowered by 3.4 percentage points to a 2.7 percent rate. While that supported growth during the quarter, it was a sign of weakening domestic demand.

Government spending fell at a 4.0 percent rate, instead of the previously reported 3.9 percent.

The department also revised after-tax corporate profits to a 5.7 percent rate of decline instead of 4.1 percent.

That was still the biggest decline since the fourth quarter of 2008 and reflected the end of a special tax bonus that allowed U.S. companies to accelerate the depreciation of assets.

Pottery fragments found in a south China cave have been confirmed to be 20,000 years old, making them the oldest known pottery in the world, archaeologists say.

The findings, which will appear in the journal Science on Friday, add to recent efforts that have dated pottery piles in east Asia to more than 15,000 years ago, refuting conventional theories that the invention of pottery correlates to the period about 10,000 years ago when humans moved from being hunter-gathers to farmers.

The research by a team of Chinese and American scientists also pushes the emergence of pottery back to the last ice age, which might provide new explanations for the creation of pottery, said Gideon Shelach, chair of the Louis Frieberg Center for East Asian Studies at The Hebrew University in Israel.

"The focus of research has to change," Shelach, who is not involved in the research project in China, said by telephone.

In an accompanying Science article, Shelach wrote that such research efforts "are fundamental for a better understanding of socio-economic change (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) and the development that led to the emergency of sedentary agricultural societies".

He said the disconnection between pottery and agriculture as shown in east Asia might shed light on specifics of human development in the region.

Wu Xiaohong, professor of archaeology and museology at Peking University and the lead author of the Science article that details the radiocarbon dating efforts, told The Associated Press that her team was eager to build on the research.

"We are very excited about the findings. The paper is the result of efforts done by generations of scholars," Wu said. "Now we can explore why there was pottery in that particular time, what were the uses of the vessels, and what role they played in the survival of human beings."

The ancient fragments were discovered in the Xianrendong cave in south China's Jiangxi province, which was excavated in the 1960s and again in the 1990s, according to the journal article.

Wu, a chemist by training, said some researchers had estimated that the pieces could be 20,000 years old, but that there were doubts.

"We thought it would be impossible because the conventional theory was that pottery was invented after the transition to agriculture that allowed for human settlement."

But by 2009, the team ? which includes experts from Harvard and Boston universities ? was able to calculate the age of the pottery fragments with such precision that the scientists were comfortable with their findings, Wu said.

"The key was to ensure the samples we used to date were indeed from the same period of the pottery fragments," she said.

That became possible when the team was able to determine the sediments in the cave were accumulated gradually without disruption that might have altered the time sequence, she said.

Scientists took samples, such as bones and charcoal, from above and below the ancient fragments in the dating process, Wu said.

"This way, we can determine with precision the age of the fragments, and our results can be recognized by peers," Wu said.

Shelach said he found the process done by Wu's team to be meticulous and that the cave had been well protected throughout the research.

The same team in 2009 published an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, in which they determined the pottery fragments found in south China's Hunan province to be 18,000 years old, Wu said.

"The difference of 2,000 years might not be significant in itself, but we always like to trace everything to its earliest possible time," Wu said. "The age and location of pottery fragments help us set up a framework to understand the dissemination of the artifacts and the development of human civilization."

Massachusetts Motorcycle Helmet Laws

Massachusetts motorcycle helmet laws mandate that:

o Every person operating or riding as a passenger on a motorcycle (including in a sidecar) must wear protective headgear AND

o The headgear must conform with specific minimum standards

o No operator may allow a passenger to ride without protective headgear.

The one exception to this law is that operators and passengers can ride motorcycles without helmets if:

o The motorcyclist is participating in a properly permitted public parade AND

o The parade participant is 18 years of age or older.

Benefits of the Massachusetts Helmet Law

According to statistics from the federal government, in 2006, there were 35 times more deaths on motorcycles per mile traveled than in cars. In 2007, there were more motorcyclists? deaths from motorcycle accidents than in any previously recorded year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

There are a number of reasons why Massachusetts motorcycle helmet laws are enforced, and why motorcycle riders are vulnerable to accident and injury:

o Motorcycles can attain very high speeds very rapidly

o Motorcycles are unenclosed

o Motorcycles are not stable in high speed braking situations

o Motorcycles are less visible than other vehicles

Helmets have been proven effective in preventing brain injuries (TBI) and studies have shown they reduce the possibility that a crash will be fatal by 37%.

Studies have also shown that when motorcycle helmet laws are enacted, riders wear helmets nearly 100% of the time. According to the NHTSA, when there is no helmet law present, motorcycle helmet use drops to approximately 50%.

The market for 'panic alarm' apps on smartphones is littered with simple apps which just make a lot of noise if you get attacked, but not much else. This is a mistake. Smartphones have cameras, microphones, and can broadcast their location - basically everything you need to turn the phone into the ultimate safety device. So it's surprising that so few startups are addressing this area. One that has been around since 2011 out of Denmark is PanicGuard. The app will sound an alarm, SMS someone, start recording video and track your location. But it's expensive ($6 a month), and is failing to scale outside the UK/Europe. Its main competitor is the bSafe app on iOS and Android from the startup called Bipper. This has now launched a major push into the U.S. with both a free and paid-for model, and a way of using it for more everyday safety. It's this business model which has seen it become the most downloaded mobile safety app in Europe to date, with over 100,000 downloads.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Web game maker Zynga is trying to turn its digital playground into an even more entertaining place amid investor doubts about its ability to build a long-lasting business.

The features announced Tuesday include a network designed to provide players of Zynga's games with the same tools whether they are competing on Facebook's online social network, a mobile device or the company's own website.

The network is called "Zynga With Friends." That's a reference to one of Zynga's most popular games, the Scrabble-inspired "Words With Friends."

Zynga Inc. also previewed several new games, including a food-themed title called "ChefVille."

Investors evidently weren't impressed. Zynga's stock fell 30 cents close at $5.77. That's well below Zynga's initial public offering price of $10 six months ago.

Zynga has more than 290 million users.
