Governors to meet National Assembly and Finance Ministry over ...

As the Ddbate over foreign loans continues in the country, the thirty-six State Governors are poised to approach National Assembly legislators? and officials of the Federal Ministry of Finance on pertinent issues surrounding the loan proposal.

During the planned meetings, the Governors are to clearly convince and clear the air of uncertainty over their various States loan requests and also stress the viability and importance of the loan.

This was a resolution taken at the Nigerian Governors Forum meeting(NGF) held in Abuja yesterday Night with the Governors in attendance, where they met to discuss the State of the Nation.

Also in the meeting the State Governors reiterated the issue of the management of the funds accruing to the Federation account, and? wanted the Supreme Court to compel the Federal? Government to give a total report on how the monies realized? from the fuel subsidy scheme has been utilized.

This is coming on the heels of last week?s presentation by the Finance Minister Dr Ngozi Iweala and the Finance Commissioners across the 36 States in the Country before the Senate? committee on Foreign Debts.

During the presentation Senator Ehigie Uzamere the Chairman of the Committee stated that there was a lot of concern on the part of the Legislature over the rush or scramble for loan by the States, and urged more caution as excessive loans constitute burdens to the Nation?s economic sustainability.

It would? also be recalled that the Federal Government and Lagos State Government have not been in good terms over the? $600million proposal from the Centre of Excellence which the FG is trying to discourage.

Other States with high borrowing proposal include Anambra, Ondo, Niger, and Enugu states and apart from Lagos State the Federal Government is also cautious about guaranteeing some of the State loans, which is not going down well with the State Government.

With the planned meeting between the Governors and the National Assembly/ Finance Ministry officials it is expected that the whole misperception, disagreements, and uncertainties over the loan proposals will be resolved amicably.
