(AP) ? "R-G-3!" was all Redskins fans needed to chant when they wanted to express their love for Robert Griffin III. For the lesser-known rookie, they opted for his whole name: "Alf-red Mor-ris!"

It's a new generation that has Washington atop the NFC East for the first time this millennium. There's Griffin ? the vocal leader, the first-round draft pick, the Heisman Trophy winner, the team captain. And there's Morris ? the out-of-nowhere sixth-rounder from Florida Atlantic who merely ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns in the division-clincher and broke the franchise single-season rushing record.

"These," cornerback DeAngelo Hall said, "aren't ordinary rookies."

The Redskins claimed their first division title since 1999, beating the archrival Dallas Cowboys 28-18 Sunday night in a winner-take-all finale to end the NFL's regular season.

"I was 9 years old in 1999," said Griffin, sporting a black baseball cap commemorating the title. "So I stand before you at 22, and the Redskins are the NFC East champions. To me, talking to Alfred after the game, it's the first time the Redskins have been champs since '99 and we came in and we did it in one year. The sky's the limit for this team."

Griffin, gradually regaining his explosiveness after spraining his right knee four weeks ago, ran for 63 yards and a touchdown for the Redskins (10-6), who finished with seven straight wins after their bye week. They became the first NFL team to rally from 3-6 and make the playoffs since the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1996.

With the running game working so well, Griffin didn't have to throw much. He completed nine of 18 passes for 100 yards.

Washington will host Seattle next Sunday, the Redskins' third consecutive playoff game against the Seahawks. They lost at Seattle as a wild-card team in the 2005 and 2007 seasons.

"I've been here for the 4-12, the bad times, almost being the joke of the NFL," veteran defensive lineman Kedric Golston said. "But to do this with this group of guys ? the old and the new ? it's good to be here."

Certainly, Sunday night was mostly about the new. Morris had touchdown runs of 1, 17 and 32 yards and was so dominant that the Cowboys ? missing their five best run defenders due to injuries ? fell hook, line and sinker nearly every time the Redskins faked the ball to him. He finished with 1,613 yards for the year, topping Clinton Portis' 1,516 in 2005.

"I'll tell you what: Alfred Morris became a star tonight," Redskins tight end Chris Cooley said. "He deserved it. He's a phenomenal football player."

To which Morris answered: "I'm never a star. I'll never be a star. Other people might think I'm a star, but I'm just Alfred."

He won't have much choice if he keeps this up. On the Redskins' go-ahead drive in the third quarter, six plays were runs by Morris and the other three involved fakes to him. The touchdown came when Griffin faked to Morris ? one of several times linebacker DeMarcus Ware was totally fooled by deception in the backfield ? and ran 10 yards around left end to put Washington ahead 14-7.

The Cowboys (8-8), meanwhile, will miss the playoffs for the third straight season, having stumbled in a make-or-break end-of-regular-season game for the third time in five years.

Tony Romo threw three interceptions ? matching his total from the last eight games combined. A poor throw was picked by Rob Jackson when the Cowboys had a chance to drive for a winning score in the final minutes.

"I feel as though I let our team down," Romo said.

Romo completed 20 of 31 passes for 218 yards, and his career is now further tainted by post-Christmas disappointments, including Week 17 losses to the Philadelphia Eagles (44-6) in 2008 and the New York Giants (31-14) last year. He's also 1-3 in playoff games.

"Your legacy will be written when you're done playing the game," Romo said. "And when it's over with, you'll look back. ... It's disappointing not being able to get over that hump."

The Cowboys played catch-up after Morris' 32-yard scamper gave the Redskins a 21-10 cushion with 10:32 to play, pulling within three on a 10-yard pass to Kevin Ogletree and a 2-point conversion with 5:50 left. But Morris' third touchdown sealed the win with 1:09 remaining.

The Cowboys also dealt with in-game injuries to receivers Miles Austin (left ankle), Dez Bryant (back) and Dwayne Harris (lower leg). Bryant, who had a torrid second half of the season despite breaking his left index finger, had four catches for 71 yards.

Washington's slow start this season prompted coach Mike Shanahan to dismiss playoff hopes and declare the remaining seven games would determine which players would be on his team "for years to come."

Griffin and his teammates had other plans, and the coach quickly changed his tune. Now the Redskins will be playing in January.

"All odds were against us," Morris said. "But we believed in each other."

Notes: Griffin set two more NFL rookie records. His 102.4 passer rating topped Ben Roethlisberger's 98.1 in 2004, and his 1.3 percentage of passes intercepted is better than Charlie Batch's 1.98 in 1998. Griffin had already set the league mark for rushing yards by a rookie QB (815). ... The Redskins also set a franchise record for fewest turnovers in a season with 14, fewer even than the 1982 team that played only nine regular-season games because of a players strike.

GOP Sen. Coburn: House Republicans ?Made A Mistake In Not Supporting Plan B?

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) paid a visit to CBS? Face the Nation on Sunday, where Norah O?Donnell questioned him about his party and their approach to the fiscal cliff negotiations. Looking to his political counterparts in the House, Coburn said they should have come together to pass Speaker John Boehner?s ?Plan B.?

On the issue of increased revenue, O?Donnell asked whether ?Boehner part of the problem? Sen. Reid said he?s running a dictatorship.?

?I don?t think so at all,? Coburn replied. The House has passed a lot of things, he said, whereas there?s been inaction in the Senate, and ?that?s the majority leader?s prerogative.?

?I think Speaker Boehner has done a good job with the members that he has,? he continued. ?I think they made a mistake in not supporting Plan B. We would have modified it and sent it back, and then they would have had it make a decision on it.?

Coburn pointed to the increased in the size of the government, noting that ?nobody in Washington is doing anything to fix the growth of the government to where we have one that we can afford.?

Book Review: Ready For PREtirement - Plan Retirement Early So ...

This book is about protecting your future from catastrophic loss due to illness or changes in the market. A heart-wrenching experience with my parents fuels my personal and professional mission. Bolstered by the experience, I studied law, became certified as a paralegal, earned insurance and financial licenses, and began volunteering at senior centers. There, I discovered that lawyers were bilking seniors ? friends I had come to care for ? for tens of thousands of dollars in unnecessary legal fees!

After seeing how these people had been abused, I wanted to make it easy for the average person to set up a complete estate plan. I began counseling retirees to achieve financial security and set up inexpensive trusts. Because financial security and PREtirement planning is important to everyone, I began counseling people of all ages including newlyweds, GenXers, the Sandwich Generation, Baby Boomers, and retirees. it is a compilation of over 20 years of experience advising over 5,000 families on Estate Planning. It is not only about retirement, but PREtirement - Plan Retirement Early for Safe Money and a Fabulous Future

The case is over, but legal fees in city's fight against longtime ...

Gear, called it fair that the city pay legal fees for the employee who prevailed after being fired twice on allegations of racism and incompetence.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A Birmingham city accountant is back to work after a two-and-a-half year fight, but a final tally?of the legal bill?remains?in question.

The city's tab so far is more than $287,000 for outside lawyers in the dispute with longtime accountant Virginia Spidle, and that bill could top nearly half a million dollars with a demand for payment from Spidle's lawyer.

The city hired the Hand Arendall law firm to handle its dispute with Spidle. That?legal bill totaled $287,624, according to information obtained from the city through a public information request from al.com/The Birmingham News.

But now with the case over, Spidle's lawyer is renewing her demand that the city also pay her client's legal fees.

Gayle Gear, called it a matter of fairness that the city also pay the legal fees for the employee who prevailed in her case against the city after being fired twice by Mayor William Bell's administration on allegations of racism and incompetence.

"We have already put the city on notice by filing a claim, and we intend to pursue that claim so that her fees are paid in light of the fact that the city has conceded," Gear said this afternoon.

Spidle should not be liable for paying the cost to defend her against charges that were ultimately either dropped or found untrue, Gear maintained.

Spidle returned to work last week - this time at the city's invitation. In a letter from lawyers representing the city, officials agreed to allow Spidle to return to work Dec. 17 as a chief accountant in another department. Spidle was previously a chief accountant in the city's Finance Department.

The city's letter?dropping its protests and inviting Spidle?back to work?came long after both the Jefferson County Personnel Board and a three-judge panel ordered her? back to work and?back pay for her time off work.

The letter also came just before another Personnel Board hearing was set to begin regarding a second set of charges the city used to fire the accountant.

The Personnel Board's ruling did not mention lawyer's fees. Gear said her request for fees is under $200,000 and she plans to resubmit her demand to the city.

Although Spidle is back at work, in another department, Gear said the fight to clear her client's name and reputation was long, damaging and expensive.

"Even repaying her loss of income doesn't make her whole," Gear said. "How many resolutions does the city really need? How about a resolution that it will treat its employees fairly? They will break your back financially, emotionally, and that's what they did do her."

Ouya releases SDK for $99 game console, shows off developer ...

Now that Ouya is shipping the first developer kits?of its upcoming $99 Android-based video game console, the company has opened a software developer portal, launched a software developer kit, and shown off an early preview of the user interface.

The Ouya team has also posted an unboxing video, giving us a good look at the first developer consoles.

What we?re looking at isn?t the finished hardware. While the developer kits have the same basic specs as the units that will ship to customers in April (including an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage), these special edition models have clear plastic cases.

That means you can see the guts of the Ouya game console without even opening it up ? and the same goes for the 2 wireless controllers that come with the kits.

Unfortunately the game controllers are still works in progress, and the team is still working out some of the kinks.

The developer kits also include microUSB ports that let you connect the system to a computer for Android programming and debugging. It?s not clear if the final product will have that port ? but one of the key goals of the Ouya project is to create an open platform, so I can?t see why the consumer device would ship without a microUSB port.

Meanwhile, folks interested in developing games for the Ouya who haven?t been able to snag one of the limited edition developer kits can check out the Developer Portal for details on coding for the Ouya using off-the-shelf hardware to test their games.

The Ouya is available for pre-order for $99 plus shipping, and it?s expected to ship in April, 2013.

Liquid crystal research may lead to creation of new materials that can be actively controlled

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Contributing geometric and topological analyses of micro-materials, University of Massachusetts Amherst mathematician Robert Kusner aided experimental physicists at the University of Colorado (UC) by successfully explaining the observed "beautiful and complex patterns revealed" in three-dimensional liquid crystal experiments. The work is expected to lead to creation of new materials that can be actively controlled.

Kusner is a geometer, an expert in the analysis of variational problems in low-dimensional geometry and topology, which concerns properties preserved under continuous deformation such as stretching and bending. His work over 3 decades has focused on the geometry and topology of curves, surfaces and other spaces that arise in nature, such as soap films, knots and the shapes of fluid droplets. Kusner agrees with physicist and lead author Ivan Smalyukh of UC Boulder that their collaboration is the first to show in experiments that some of the most fundamental topological theorems hold up in real materials. Their findings appear in the current early online issue of Nature.

UMass Amherst's Kusner explains, "There are two important aspects of this work. First, the experimental work by the Colorado team, who fabricated topologically complex micro-materials allowing controlled experiments of three-dimensional liquid crystals. Second, the theoretical work performed by us mathematicians and theoretical physicists while visiting the University of California Santa Barbara's Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP). We provided the geometric and topological analysis of these experiments, to explain the observed patterns and predict what patterns should be seen when experimental conditions are changed."

Kusner was the lone mathematician among four organizers of last summer's workshop on "Knotted Fields" at KITP, which led to this work. The workshop engaged about a dozen other mathematicians and about twice as many theoretical and experimental physicists in a month-long investigation of the interplay between low-dimensional topology and what physicists call "soft matter."

In their experiments, the physicists at UC Boulder showed that tiny topological particles injected into a liquid crystal medium behave in a manner consistent with established theorems in geometry and topology, Kusner says. The researchers say they have thus identified approaches for building new materials using topology.

UC Boulder's Smalyukh and colleagues set up the experiment by first creating colloids, solutions in which tiny particles are dispersed but not dissolved in a host medium, such as milk, paint and shaving cream. Specifically, they injected tiny, different-shaped particles into a liquid crystal, which behaves something like a liquid and a solid. Once injected into a liquid crystal, the particles behaved as predicted by topology.

Smalyukh says, "Our study shows that interaction between particles and molecular alignment in liquid crystals follows the predictions of topological theorems, making it possible to use these theorems in designing new composite materials with unique properties that cannot be encountered in nature or synthesized by chemists. These findings lay the groundwork for new applications in experimental studies of low-dimensional topology, with important potential ramifications for many branches of science and technology."

For example, he adds, these topological liquid crystal colloids could be used to upgrade current liquid crystal displays like those used in laptops and television screens, to allow them to interact with light in new, more energy efficient ways.

NASA Unveils E-books on Hubble, Webb Space Telescopes

NASA has just released two free e-books about the Hubble Space Telescope and its not-yet-launched successor, with interactive features that let readers watch a galaxy collision or manipulate a telescope model between pages, agency officials say.

The Hubble Space Telescope launched in 1990 and has a mission lifetime through at least 2013. The space-based observatory has supplied some of the most dazzling visible-light images of distant cosmic objects, which are featured in "Hubble Space Telescope: Discoveries."

The James Webb Space Telescope, which will be almost three times the size of Hubble, has been designed to work best at infrared wavelengths in order to study the very distant universe, looking for the first stars and galaxies that ever emerged. The e-book, "Webb Space Telescope: Science Guide," explains the technology behind the mission, which is slated to launch in 2018.

"These new e-books from NASA will allow people to discover Hubble and Webb in a whole new way ? both the science and the technology behind building them," Amber Straughn, an astrophysicist on the Webb telescope project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement. "They collect all of the amazing resources about these two observatories in an excellent product that I think people will really enjoy."

The e-books are available at the Apple iBookstore or can be downloaded as a PDF here: http://hubblesite.org/ibooks/

Intelligentsia: Elevate Your Home Brew | iPhone.AppStorm

Are you looking to perfect your home coffee brewing technique? Intelligentsia, a coffee bar with locations in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, seeks to elevate your coffee experience from bean to cup. These guys don?t just sell coffee, they develop blends working directly with growers and they perform the roasting. With the Intelligentsia Coffee app, you can geek out on coffee by checking out the beautifully illustrated brewing techniques, keeping up with the latest seasonal coffees offered and utilizing the brew timer for ultimate brewing precision.

This smart, sleek app also connects you with Intelligentsia via their twitter feed and maps of all locations (with hours). Share your favorite coffee blends from the app on Facebook and find impressions from other coffee lovers (or leave your own) in the coffee comments.

If you know what a Chemex is or carefully calibrate your coffee grinder for the perfect cup of French Press every morning, the Intelligentsia Coffee app was made for you. Did I mention it?s free?

Like the article? You should subscribe and follow us on twitter.

Getting Started

Open the app and you?ll the home screen is a list of current coffee offerings from Intelligentsia Coffee. In this view you can see the coffee name and its three most prominent flavors (for example: cranberry, fig, vanilla). Tap the button in the top right corner to apply filters to the list. This function allows you to narrow the list by country or flavor, amongst other attributes. Browsing the coffees is fun and all, but doesn?t serve much of a purpose since you can?t purchase them in the app (go to their brick-and-mortar coffee shops or their website).

Home screen on the left, filters on the right.

Home screen on the left, filters on the right.

Dig Deeper

Tap on the coffee to get more information in the form of concise notecards navigated by a swiping motion. The first card expands on the three prominent flavors and includes Intelligentsia quality labels regarding whether or not the coffee is Direct Trade and in Season. The second card shares facts such as bean varietal, date of harvest and country of origin.

Swipe through notecards for more info on the selected coffee.

The third and final card is a menu of options you can tap to select. Find out the long story behind that particular bean, view related photographs, share the coffee on Facebook or by email, view comments from others or add your own. I noticed the Video icon is dead for all the coffees, images can only be seen in landscape mode (the app is oriented in portrait mode) and there don?t seem to be any comments. The comment function is email based, and comes off clunky and dated for such a modern-looking app. It appears that users are ignoring it altogether.

A menu of options on the left. Tap on the photo option and the image loads in landscape orientation, as seen on the right.

The Best Part

Leave the home screen by tapping on another icon at the base of the screen, and you?ll discover the best part of Intelligentsia. A single tap on the Brewing icon takes you to a menu of brewing methods, from vintage Pourover to complicated Siphon Brewer to the approachable French press. Tap on a brewing method for a fully illustrated slideshow on the whole process. This is the meat of the app, complete with lists of all the equipment you?ll need and smart tips that the pros use. Up in the top right corner of the screen you?ll notice a button shaped like a timer with an arrow. Tap it and you?re given the option to set the brew timer. You can then return to the step-by-step guide exactly where you left off.

Brew Timer can always be accessed by tapping on its icon at the bottom of the screen. Select a brew method and the time is calculated for you. Leave the app to check your email or answer the phone, and the alert will still chime when your coffee is ready. Certain brewing methods, like the Siphon Brewer, require stirring at regular intervals. Set the timer and it will alert you with instructions on what step to perform. See? It?s more than just a timer ? it?s a smart timer!

Select a brewing method, like French Press, and the Brew Timer calculates the time, alerting you when the brew is ready or if additional steps are required.

The Catch-All Icon

The last icon is About, a random collection of stuff that looks like someone took the About page of a website and incorporated it into the app. Tap on an icon for more information. Only a couple of the icons are truly useful in this mobile setting: the compass and Twitter icon. Tap the compass to access a map of Intelligentsia Coffee locations and hours of operation. Swipe the screen to navigate to the next slide, a description of the shop and neighborhood. There is also the option to open Google Maps in the browser for directions based on your location, assuming you?re connected to the Internet. For the Intelligentsia twitter feed, tap the blue T and find the latest updated news.

The About page is a catch-all of icons, pictured left. Tap the compass for maps and directions to Intelligentsia Coffee shops, pictured right.

The rest of the icons on the About page are for static information. The Intelligentsia logo of a winged coffee bean takes you to a long description of the company?s mission and history. In Season describes the label applied to coffee beans and what seasonality of coffee means. The black and white arrows symbol highlights the company focus on direct trade with growers. Tapping the red emblem brings up information on The Black Cat Project, a pursuit of the perfect espresso.

Conclusion

Intelligentsia Coffee is free, beautifully designed and rich in useful information. I give this app an 8/10, knocking it only because of the clunkiness when it comes to social interaction and sharing. The illustrated step-by-step brewing guides are the best part of this app. No matter how you like your coffee, Intelligentsia has a tip to improve your home brew. The Brew Timer is more than just a pretty face; it?s smart too, alerting you to steps at timed intervals. Even if you don?t live near an Intelligentsia Coffee shop or buy their beans online, this app will seduce you into loving their brand. What coffee lover wouldn?t appreciate a better brew?

Twister record leaves South in the dark

After sweeping through the Midwest with blinding snow, a major winter storm brought a rare white Christmas to parts of the South and set off damaging tornadoes. The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore reports.

By Tracy Connor, NBC News

Crews scrambled to restore power Wednesday after a string of Christmas tornadoes tore across the South, toppling trees, ripping off roofs, and dropping one-inch hailstones.

The National Weather Service said there were a record 34 tornadoes reported in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and?Alabama on Tuesday.

A state of emergency was declared in?Mississippi, where homes, roads and businesses were damaged in at least nine counties. Eight people were injured but expected to survive, officials said.

A tornado watch was issued Wednesday for the eastern Carolinas until 5:00 p.m. ET.

At one point late Tuesday, holiday celebrations went dark for at least 150,000 customers in Alabama; electricity had been restored to all but 8,500 by the next morning, according to Alabama Power.

The worst of the tornadoes hit Tuesday afternoon in Mobile, Ala.

Rick Cauley, who was hosting relatives for Christmas, got everyone in the house to a shelter at the high school down the block.

"As luck would have it, that's where the tornado hit," Cauley told The Associated Press. "The pressure dropped and the ears started popping and it got crazy for a second."

The school was damaged, but the family was fine.

Mobile Press-Register reporter John Sharp wrote that he hunkered down in his bathtub in the fetal position while the power flickered off and the twister roared around his building.

When he walked outside, he was stunned. The roof of a small shopping center had caved in, and several cars in a restaurant parking lot were destroyed.

Hundreds more flights canceled as Christmas storm moves east

?Visibly, it was like a bomb has gone off at The Loop,? he wrote. ?A one-way street sign was literally sawed into half. The Dauphin Island Parkway/Airport Boulevard sign was flattened. Power lines were lying on the ground.

?It's a Christmas miracle no one was killed,? he added.

Mobile?s Trinity Episcopal Church lost a large section of its roof and a wall, but officials were looking on the bright side. Hours before the tornado touched down, there were 500 people in the church for Christmas Eve services.

"Thank God this didn't happen last night," senior warden Scott Rye said.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley released a statement thanking first responders for their holiday efforts.

Christmas storms spread snow, tornadoes across US, snarling travel

"The people of Alabama are strong," he said. "We will recover together.?

Yuletide twisters are unusual, but they happen. Ten storm systems in the last 50 years have spawned a holiday tornado, National Weather Service spokesman Chris Vaccaro told the AP.

In 1982, 29 tornadoes in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi killed three people and injured 32 over Christmas.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(AP Photo/Alexander Zemlianichenko)

(AP) ? The upper chamber of Russia's parliament on Wednesday unanimously voted in favor of a measure banning Americans from adopting Russian children. It now goes to President Vladimir Putin to sign or turn down.

All 143 members of the Federation Council present voted to support the bill, which has sparked criticism from both the United States and from Russian activists who say it victimizes children by depriving them of the chance to escape often-dismal orphanages.

The bill is one part of a larger measure by angry lawmakers retaliating against a recently signed U.S. law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators. Putin hasn't committed to signing the bill, but has referred to it as a legitimate response to the new U.S. law.

Some top government officials, including the foreign minister, have spoken flatly against it, arguing the measure would be in violation of Russia's constitution and international obligations.

But Senator Mikhail Margelov, chairman of the Council's foreign affairs committee, referred to the bill as "a natural and a long overdue response" to the U.S. legislation.

"Children must be placed in Russian families, and this is a cornerstone issue for us," he said.

Several people with posters protesting the bill were detained outside the Council before the vote. "Children get frozen in the Cold War," one poster read.

There are about 740,000 children without parental custody in Russia, according to UNICEF. More than 60,000 Russian children have been adopted in the United States in the past 20 years.

The bill is named in honor of Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler who was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours. The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Russian lawmakers argue that by banning adoptions to the U.S. they would be protecting children and encouraging adoptions inside Russia.

Russian children rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov told the Interfax news agency that 46 children who were about to be adopted by U.S. citizens would stay in Russia if the bill is adopted ? despite court rulings in some of these cases authorizing the adoptions.

The ombudsman supported the bill, saying that foreign adoptions discourage Russians from adopting children.

"A foreigner who has paid for an adoption always gets a priority compared to potential Russian adoptive parents," Astakhov said. "A great country like Russia cannot sell its children."

The Russian law allows foreign adoptions only if a Russian family has not expressed interest a child in question.

Margelov said that a bilateral Russian-U.S. agreement binds Russia to notify of a halt in adoptions 12 months in advance.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agencies that the president would consider the bill within the next two weeks.

GOP Approval Ratings Plummet After 'Plan B ... - Business Insider

AP

Americans' previous bright outlook on leaders resolving the year-end fiscal cliff has plunged in recent days, and a new Gallup poll suggests?that they place most of their early blame on Republican leaders in Congress.

Only 26 percent of voters approve of the job Congressional Republicans are doing in handling fiscal cliff negotiations, down 3 percent from a week ago. At the same time, President Barack Obama's approval rating on the fiscal cliff has soared from 48 percent a week ago to 54 percent today.

Only 50 percent of respondents think that there will be some kind of deal in the final few days to avert the cliff. Forty-eight percent now think that the U.S. will go over the cliff.

Americans' optimism on that question has plummeted 15 points in the past week. Here's a look:

Gallup

The poll follows the failure last week of House Speaker John Boehner's "Plan B,"?which failed to garner enough Republican support to earn a floor vote last week.

The Gallup survey also follows the overall trend of fiscal cliff polling, which has not looked good for Republicans. In a Quinnipiac poll taken two weeks ago, more voters said they would blame Republicans by a 53-27 margin.

Gaza rocket attacks on Israel unlawful - rights group

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Palestinian militants violated the laws of war by launching rockets at Israeli cities from the Gaza Strip during last month's fighting, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Monday.

The New York-based group also said that militant organizations in the territory, which is ruled by the Islamist movement Hamas, put Palestinian civilians in harm's way by firing the rockets from within densely populated areas.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri dismissed the charges: "This report is biased because it equates a nuclear-armed country using all means of aggression against civilians and a people subject to the occupation who are defending themselves against Israeli violations of international accords amid the silence of the international community," he said.

Israel launched a November 14-21 air offensive with the declared aim of ending persistent rocket barrages on its territory.

Medical officials in the Gaza Strip said some 170 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed in the hostilities. HRW said two of the Palestinian dead were apparently hit by rockets that fell short of their intended targets in Israel.

Six Israelis, including two soldiers, were killed in rocket strikes, the Israeli police and military said.

"Palestinian armed groups made clear in their statements that harming civilians was their aim. There is simply no legal justification for launching rockets at populated areas," HRW said in a report.

It said rocket crews fired from areas "near homes, businesses and a hotel, unnecessarily placing civilians in the vicinity at grave risk from Israeli counter-fire".

As the ruling authority in the Gaza Strip, Hamas should, "stop unlawful attacks and punish those responsible", HRW said. "The laws of war prohibit reprisal attacks against civilians, regardless of unlawful attacks by the other side", it added.

In reports issued earlier this month, HRW said Israel had targeted journalists and killed 12 members of a single family in a strike on their home, violating the laws of war.

The Israeli military said in response to the HRW allegations that it "acts in accordance with the laws of armed conflict, despite the ongoing deliberate violations and abuse of these laws by the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip".

Christmas shopping: A pink kitchen set and the 'buying local' dilemma

I wasted hours looking for a cheaper version online, when my dad was willing to pay more at the local store. He made me realize that I was all about 'buying local' until I had to shell out more money. I've learned:?I can?t always pay more, but I don?t always have to pay less.

He was trying to buy a Christmas present for my three-year-old at a store in Decatur, Ill. where I grew up, but I had found a less expensive toy kitchen online. I shouldn?t have gotten involved, but in my constant pursuit of a better deal, and my inherent cheapness, I didn?t want him to pay too much. Now in addition to squashing his enthusiasm and Christmas spirit, I seemed to be stomping on my father?s moral code.

Every holiday season, he sends me a check to pick out gifts for my children, except last year. During our Thanksgiving visit to Illinois, Dad got such a kick out of watching his granddaughter pretend to cook he decided she needed her own mini range and refrigerator.

On his lunch hour from the firm where he has worked since the day he graduated from law school, Dad went to Haines & Essick. The small stationary and gift store has been a Decatur institution since 1902. Today, it is one of the few stores left downtown, which sadly has more parking spaces than places to shop.

Before we were even back home in Maine, Dad had e-mailed me a picture of a kitchen the store could ship just in time for Christmas. My 70-year-old father had never sent me anything online so his behavior was noteworthy. We do e-mail, but it?s a process that involves his secretary, Ginger, printing out my messages for him to read, and then my Dad dictaphones his response for Ginger to type up and e-mail back to me.

The kitchen in the picture was fabulous. It had a wooden oven and a microwave, plenty of refrigerator space for fake food and even a drink dispenser ? but the price tag quite literally took my breath away. For a moment, I thought if my father was willing to fork over $300 for a toy maybe I could talk him into remodeling my actual kitchen.

I spent the morning online pricing other toy kitchens, until I located a pink retro model from the same company for a third of the price.

My e-mail with the lower-priced model presented my Dad with a quandary: Mrs. Miller in the Haines & Essick?s toy department had spent a lot of time helping him select the kitchen set; it didn?t seem right for him to go buy it cheaper somewhere else.

By the time he got me on the phone, Dad had been to Haines & Essick four times and was having Ginger hold all his calls while he figured out how to fairly procure his granddaughter?s present. Mrs. Miller could order the pink kitchen I found online, but not at the same price. After discussing numerous scenarios, she conceded that my Dad should take the better deal online. During his third visit, Dad tried to pay Mrs. Miller some arbitrary finder?s fee, handing her a hundred dollar bill that she refused to take.

In the end, my father bought the pink kitchen from Haines & Essick even though it cost him more.

I?ve always thrown around the term ?buying local,? and thought I walked the walk: I frequent farm stands and independent bookstores. After college, during my self-righteous phase when I came back home and threw around all the new jargon I learned, I no doubt lectured my father on the importance of ?buying local? and eating ?locally-sourced food? ? things he had done all his life without affixing a fancy term to it.

My father made me realize that I was all about ?buying local? until I had to shell out more money. Granted I do not have a lot of extra cash, which influences my decisionmaking, but I also waste a lot of time trying to get a perceived deal. I spent four hours looking for a cheaper kitchen, time that I could have been working, and billing, for a grant I was supposed to be writing. It wasn?t even my money. Why was I so determined to get the best deal?

For my father, whose hero is Abraham Lincoln, buying the cheap kitchen online was a kind of dishonesty.

Haines & Essick is his store ? the store down the street from his office where people know his name. It?s the store where he has bought Christmas gifts for my brother and me?for 40 years. During my visit home, I was glad to see that it was still there. But I had to admit, if people like me continue to buy everything online or at chain stores, it might not be there in the future. And I know through my work as a grant writer, that it?s the local merchants who sponsor the Little League teams, Meals on Wheels, and other important community programs ? not the big box stores. Local merchants may have to charge more, but they also give back to their communities.

I realize, I can?t always pay more, but I don?t always have to pay less. I like to think I buy local. My dad actually does.

Polar bear row splits campaigners

Wildlife campaigners are at odds over a new attempt to ban the global trade in polar bear parts.

Some activists say the market for rugs and ornaments made from the bears is driving them to extinction,

But others argue that the most pressing problem for the species is climate change and the disappearance of polar ice.

The issue will be decided at a UN wildlife conservation meeting in Thailand in March 2013.

The Humane Society International/UK says that polar bears have been brought to a tipping point by climate change but that increased hunting in recent years is pushing the species "beyond the brink."

?Start Quote

We can't be arguing for the science when it suits us and then ignore it when it doesn't suit our case?

End Quote Dr Colman O'Criodain WWF

"The drivers for the increase in recent years in the trade in polar bear parts are the extremely worrying and rapidly increasing prices being paid on international markets for polar bear parts," said Mark Jones, executive director of the Humane Society International/UK

He points to the fact that in the five years up to 2012 there has been a 375% increase in the number of polar bear skins offered at auction, some selling for as much as $12,000 (?7.400).

Opinions divided

Every year around 600 bears are legally killed by hunters in Canada and in the decade to 2010 more than 30,000 bear parts were traded as trophies, rugs and ornaments.

Opponents of the trade have now proposed a ban on the international sales of polar bear parts. It will be tabled at the next meeting of the Convention on the trade in endangered species (CITES) taking place in Thailand next March.

The move is being supported by the US and Russian governments. The last time an attempt was made to change the ruling in 2010, it was defeated after the UK and the EU voted against. Mark Jones believes the UK government's position is very influential and wants them to support the ban.

"We urgently need the British government to step forward and be a champion for polar bears by supporting their maximum protection," he added.

But some prominent campaigners are against changing the protected status of the bears. WWF has had a long association with the iconic species but believes that the threat from international trade is not significant compared to the threat from climate change.

"If we were tempted to support it on the basis of trade being a major threat, it is not," says Dr Colman O'Criodain, WWF's wildlife trade policy analyst.

"We have to focus on what is the major threat and not distract ourselves with a relatively minor one. We can't be arguing for the science when it suits us and then ignore it when it doesn't suit our case." he added.

Little impact

WWF are supported by other groups including Traffic International and IUCN. But Mark Jones says the Humane Society International have broad support for their position as well.

"We're members of a very big campaigning group called the species survival network and we do believe we have a very wide consensus among groups on this particular issue." he said.

Dr Colman O'Criodain says that WWF won't actively campaign against the ban and will accept it if it is voted through. But he argues that would be a bad outcome for polar bears.

"You could say that this is just a distraction factor and that it could have the effect of making people think something has been done to address the threat when the net effect will be almost negligible." he said.

Indigenous groups in Canada are actively working against the proposed ban. And they particularly resent the fact that the US is leading the charge for change.

"The American government is using the threat of climate change to justify banning the international trade in polar bear parts while utterly failing to do anything to reduce their own activities" said James Eetoolook of the Nunavut Tunngavik, a group that represents Inuit interests.

They argue that their own research in the western Hudson Bay region carried out earlier this year indicated that bear numbers were increasing rather than declining.

Campaign groups in favour of the new ban are taking comfort from the fact that some governments are still undecided.

A spokesperson for the UK's department of the environment, farming and rural affairs added:

"We are currently considering the proposals ahead of the Conference of the Parties meeting next year."

India moves to quell gang-rape protests, but crowds build again

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Indian government moved on Sunday to stamp out protests that have swelled in New Delhi since the gang-rape of a young woman, banning gatherings of more than five people, but still thousands poured into the heart of the capital to vent their anger.

Police in riot gear used tear gas and batons to hold crowds back from marching on the presidential palace, just as they did the day before in clashes that media reports said injured more than two dozen protesters.

Doctors said the 23-year-old victim of last week's attack, who was beaten, raped for almost an hour and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi, was still in a critical condition on respiratory support but responding to treatment.

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures.

Most sexual assaults go unreported and unremarked, but the brutality of last week's attack triggered the biggest protests in the capital since mid-2011 demonstrations against corruption that rocked the government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The protesters, predominantly college students but also housewives and even children, are demanding more steps from the authorities to ensure safety for women and some want the death penalty for the accused.

Several city metro stations were closed and several roads were barricaded on Sunday to prevent a build-up of protesters.

However, by early afternoon the crowd around the India Gate monument - normally a festive place on a Sunday - had swelled to more than 2,000, according to police there. Scuffles broke out near government buildings, where youths shouted "Down with Delhi police!" and threw bottles at the forces holding them back.

Bowing to public pressure, Sonia Gandhi, chief of the ruling Congress party, emerged from her residence after midnight to talk to protesters. She went out again on Sunday with her son, Rahul Gandhi, who is seen as a future prime minister.

"She assured us of justice," said one of the students who met the Gandhis, though some in the crowds shouted "Down with Sonia Gandhi!".

Since last week's rape, the authorities have promised better police patrolling to ensure safety for women returning from work and entertainment districts, the installation of GPS on public transport vehicles, more buses at night, and fast-track courts for swift verdicts on cases of rape and sexual assault.

Get Improved Self Improvement Results With These Little Ideas ...

TIP! It is possible to deal with the tough situations that arise in everyone?s life without becoming overly emotional. Come up with methods that will help relieve your stress and remain calm when problems pop up.

Perhaps those closest to you have given you an ultimatum about your behavior; if you don?t shape up, they?ll ship out. Personal development can turn your personal life around. This article contains some easy ways to improve yourself.

TIP! Set realistic goals that you can accomplish, and you?ll enjoy life so much more. If you work on your weaknesses, you can better yourself.

Self improvement starts with leadership. There are many different facets of leadership, but the one people talk about most is the ability to win friends and influence people. Examine your own past for the things that have affected your leadership potential. Think about the circumstances that have had the most influence in your life. How have those events changed you, if at all? Evaluate attributes that you possess which contribute to your role as a team player. By considering these questions, you can determine how to fit into a team-related setting.

An excellent self improvement suggestion is to always ensure you value what you think is best. Make an effort to have your priorities straight and strive for the best.

TIP! You will miss many opportunities to develop personally if you put off making decisions. This may mean you need to make decisions without having perfect information about the outcomes of those decisions.

If you have a habit of overreacting, you are causing yourself unneeded stress. Find ways to deal with distressing situations, and take the time to think things through. If you make a mistake, own up to it, fix it, and move on. Instead of focusing on the things you?ve lost, remind yourself of everything you have.

TIP! A useful personal development tip is that you always cherish the things you believe are most valuable. Therefore, see to it that you value the best things in all aspects of your life.

Make a decision about where you want to go in life and stick with it. If you sit in your chair thinking about how you would like your life to be, and you do nothing to make it happen, you will never get that life. You need to step up and pursue your goals to make them really happen.

TIP! If you know what your beliefs are, you can help plan out what you will be working for in personal development. Trying to change yourself in ways that are not in line with your values, is not a good idea.

Prospective employers will be more concerned as to whether you can do the job well. Finance jobs are one of the few exceptions, as your school will matter a great deal. The degree is what is critical, and what will produce opportunity.

TIP! Stay around like-minded individuals. Personal development is easier when your associates do not belittle your efforts and tempt you from your goals but instead share your drive for self-improvement.

A better diet can help you get rid of depression; try eating more complex carbohydrates. If you do not have an adequate amount of complex carbohydrates in your diet, your serotonin can become depleted. Increase your consumption of fresh fruits, raw vegetables, nuts, brown rice, assorted beans and whole grains to have a diet that is enriched in complex carbohydrates.

TIP! Maximize your time for personal development to help you get more done. This can be achieved by taking frequent breaks from work.

Arrange a meeting to speak with a counselor or clergy member. These professionals are trained and experienced in helping you understand and manage the issues you have. They can help you get on the right path to enlightenment by analyzing what is going on in your life. Talking to someone who knows how to listen and help will make you happier, and allow you to reach your goals.

TIP! In order to succeed and become a champion, it?s imperative to have a great coach. Most people who are winners have a great mentor and coach behind them.

There other uses for exercise besides weight loss. There are tons of reasons to exercise. Not only does it keep your body in good shape, but it also causes your body to release chemicals that will increase your happiness levels.

TIP! Begin today setting some money aside regularly for emergencies. Even the slightest unforeseen event can send a person?s finances spiraling into free fall.

Sexual capitol is a new trait researchers have just discovered, and they feel it is important to have. This doesn?t mean you need to use your sexuality as a means of getting the results you desire. Instead, use your charm. Many people aren?t born with excellent social skills, but developing them can make achieving your other personal development goals easier.

Keep in mind that everyday should be better than the previous one. Strive for constant and unceasing improvement. Challenge yourself to improve on something that you did yesterday.

TIP! Your core principles are important, and your actions should reflect them. Everyone has certain beliefs that reinforce their sense of self at the core.

If you are not able to deal with your own life, you cannot help the ones around you. Regardless of where you are on your path, whether you are thriving or failing, take the time to rest and restore yourself.

TIP! Because you allow yourself to be more vulnerable when pursuing personal development, failures can be especially hard to handle. What you need to realize is that failures can be used as a learning experience.

Demonstrate altruism to improve your life. Doing good for others will also benefit yourself. When you make some sacrifices that help others and not hurt yourself, you can grow as a person.

TIP! Instead of talking up all of your trophies and accomplishments, ask other people about their notable achievements and proudest moments. You can learn a lot about others from this, and have an opportunity to learn about things other people have done that warrant respect and admiration.

Do not fret! The scenarios in your mind that are caused by worrying are just that, only in your mind. Worry isn?t productive. Instead, determine the worst that could happen and prepare to address that situation should it arise. Doing so will allow you to feel ready for what may come.

TIP! Focus on the things that you have determined are most important to you. By devoting your attention to what is most important, and ignoring all the negative distractions, you will be able to find serenity and happiness.

Be realistic and smart about everything you face in life. Try and analyze things you go through to determine what aspects of your life can change and what aspects are unavoidable. If you have humility, it will be easier for you to understand your limits. Wisdom will help you do better in the future, based on the past!

TIP! Try to be the best that you can be. That passion of yours can put you on the road to success.

Try new challenges. Trying new things is a way to broaden your horizons. You are sure to learn new things while also developing new skills. You may even start a new model by doing something that has never been done before. Make your goals distinctly your own, and don?t limit the size of them based on what others have achieved.

TIP! One of the most basic requirements for your effective personal development is to willingly choose to change who you are. You can only change and grow when you openly welcome the changes and choose to evolve.

If you suffer from anxiety, try going to see a movie with a friend. This is a good way to push yourself out of your comfort zone. You can be social with your friend before and after the movie and will have to be around strangers, but you won?t have to be overly social and can recharge during the movie. You can use the trip as an opportunity to become accustomed to the company of others.

TIP! Leadership is the first step to personal development. There are many different facets of leadership, but the one people talk about most is the ability to win friends and influence people.

Leadership is about exercising authority, but good leaders are humble, too. You can redirect people in a gentle way, and keep in mind that it is best to lead by example. A true leader upholds the right virtues and practices integrity, something that a person must have in order to succeed as a leader of anyone.

TIP! Before you begin working on your personal development, you first need to understand your place in the universe. Realizing that you are but a small part of the bigger picture will potentially open your mind to attaining new insights.

As you have probably realized, the process of personal development is far from easy. However, by maintaining a good support system and keeping focused on your goals, getting through the changes will be rewarding. You should learn a lot from these tips to make your starting steps easier.
