(AP) ? The job of the South African police is to fight one of the highest crime rates in the world. Instead, the force stands accused of contributing to it.

On Thursday, the release of a video showing uniformed police binding a taxi driver to the back of a police vehicle and dragging him ? the man was later found dead in a police cell ? shocked South Africans long accustomed to stories of police misconduct.

At a bail hearing for Oscar Pistorius last week, a magistrate harshly criticized a police detective for shoddy work in the investigation into the murder case against the double-amputee athlete, who is charged with killing his girlfriend. And last year, police fired into a crowd of striking miners, killing 34 in a convulsion of violence that reminded many of the worst excesses of the apartheid era.

These high-profile episodes cap a steady flow of allegations of police misconduct, whether in top rank corruption, prosecutions of officers charged with murder and rape, or numerous anecdotes of police pulling over drivers and demanding bribes. Many South Africans mistrust the very institution that is supposed to protect them, and the scandals weaken efforts by South Africa to project itself as a model country and a leader by example in sub-Saharan Africa.

"They are there for safety, but we as a people fear them more," said Alfonso Adams, a resident of Johannesburg. "You don't know who to trust anymore."

The Daily Sun, a South African newspaper, posted footage of the dragging incident, which occurred Tuesday and was apparently filmed by several people using cellular telephones. By some accounts, taxi driver Mido Macia, 27, of Mozambique drew the attention of police when he parked in a way that blocked traffic, and then got into an altercation with officers.

"We are going to film this," several onlookers shouted in Zulu as the police roughly subdued Macia. One bystander can be heard shouting: "What has this guy done?"

It remains to be seen whether the succession of scandals will trigger such a groundswell of public outrage that the government will push through reforms to the troubled police. Rape has been a scourge of South African society for many years, but sexual violence remains endemic despite periodic outcries. In the case of the taxi driver who was dragged behind a police van, officers paid little heed to the crowd that gathered, suggesting a sense of impunity has taken hold in police ranks.

President Jacob Zuma condemned the killing of Macia, who died from head and other injuries after he was dragged in Daveyton, a township east of Johannesburg. Some commentators drew comparisons with the 1977 death of anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko, who also suffered head injuries in police custody.

"Members of the South African police service are required to operate within the confines of the law in executing their duties," Zuma said in a statement. "The visuals of the incident are horrific, disturbing and unacceptable. No human being should be treated in that manner."

Brig. Phuti Setati, a police spokesman, told South Africa's Radio 702 on Thursday afternoon that no police had yet been suspended, but said all crimes should be investigated, "irrespective of who is involved."

Johan Burger, a former police veteran and a senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, said the force rapidly expanded from 120,000 to almost 200,000 over the past decade, largely neglecting the quality of personnel that it recruited. Two police chiefs lost their jobs; one was Jackie Selebi, given a 15-year prison sentence for corruption after he went shopping with a drug smuggler in exchange for information. Selebi was later released on medical grounds.

"It is a crisis that starts at the top and filters down and it has a huge impact on morale of police on the ground," Burger said, adding that reforms to the police would be a hard, lengthy process.

"It is like trying to fix a runaway bus going downhill," he said.

Police said National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega planned to hold a news conference on the dragging incident on Friday morning. She was brought in to lead the police as an outsider with a social science and business background, and is the first woman to lead the force.

She removed chief investigator Hilton Botha in the Pistorius case after he made a number of errors in the investigation, and after it was revealed that he faced attempted murder charges stemming from a 2011 incident in which he and two other officers allegedly shot at a minivan while trying to stop it.

"Embarrassing? There is nothing embarrassing for us as the police," Phiyega said. "I am not a judge. We are not magistrates. We cannot say it was a sterling performance, not a sterling performance."

Pistorius, who was released on bail, said he accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, mistaking her for an intruder. Prosecutors say he killed her intentionally after the couple had an argument.

Botha's missteps included misjudging distances, neglecting to wear protective covers while on the crime scene and failing to push for cellular telephone records that would bolster the state's case.

"It is absolutely par for the course," said Nooshin Erfani, the coordinator of Wits Justice Project at Witwatersrand University. "Such ridiculous things happen all the time."

South Africa is also struggling with the fallout from the Marikana mine shootings. On Aug. 16, 2012, a line of South African police opened fire on striking miners, killing several dozen at a platinum mine northwest of Johannesburg. Now a judicial commission is investigating allegations that many were shot in the back as they tried to escape.

"That is a kind of a huge scar on our national psyche," Erfani said. " All of these issues now place even more of a strain on the credibility of the police."

South Africa's high crime rate has fed a gun culture that feeds off the perception that police cannot be trusted to do the job. In a country of 49 million, 15,609 were murdered over the last year.

"They are no deterrent or help," Sheila Rosslee said of South African police. Her husband owns a gun range and is a firearms instructor in eastern Pretoria.

In 2007, she fired two shots at two men who pulled guns on her, slightly wounding one. Even though she gave the police her address and phone number, she said: "They couldn't even be bothered to contact me."

Police, too, are victims.

On Jan. 27, which was designated National Police Day, the government and families of slain officers paid tribute to the "fallen heroes" of the police forces at a monument in Pretoria. Nathi Mthethwa, the minister of police, said 92 police were killed, mostly at hands of criminals, between March 2011 and April 2012.

So the distrust of police inherited from the days of white racist rule, when officers were tools of state-sponsored violence, endures almost two decades after Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president.

"What used to work in South Africa before was violence," Erfani said. "Whatever color spectrum you were at, it was a successful way of dealing with issues."

A look at a recent five-day span of cases posted by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, a watchdog agency, spells out the problem.

"Constable appears in court for rape," says one entry. "Constable convicted of murder for shooting 15 year old," says another. A third reads: "Constable sentenced to 15 years for murdering his girlfriend."

Antarctic scientists discover 18-kilogram meteorite

Feb. 28, 2013 ? An international team of scientists, working at Princess Elisabeth Antarctica research station, have discovered a meteorite with a mass of 18 kilograms embedded in the East Antarctic ice sheet, the largest such meteorite found in the region since 1988.

The eight members of the SAMBA project, from Universit? Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Japan's National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) and Tokyo University were searching for meteorites scattered across the Nansen Ice Field on January 28, when they found the 18kg ordinary chondrite. The team discovered a total of 425 meteorites, with a total weight of 75kg during the 40 day expedition, at an altitude of 2,900m, 140km south of Belgium's Princess Elisabeth Antarctica research base.

"This meteorite was a very unexpected find for us, not only due to its weight, but because we don't normally find such large meteorites in Antarctica," said Vinciane Debaille, a geologist from Universit? Libre de Bruxelles, who led the Belgian part of the team during the expedition. "This is the biggest meteorite found in East Antarctica for 25 years, so it's a very special discovery for us, only made possible by the existence and location of Princess Elisabeth Antarctica."

The SAMBA project contributes to the US and Japan-led global collection of Antarctic meteorites, and is an initiative of VUB and ULB, in collaboration with the Japanese Institute of Polar Research. SAMBA is supported by the Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO) and the International Polar Foundation.

Initial field analysis by the scientists suggests that the 18kg meteorite is an ordinary chondrite, the most abundant kind of meteorite. The fusion crust -- the meteorite's outer casing -- was eroded, allowing the scientists to inspect the rock underneath. The meteorite is currently undergoing a special thawing process in Japan -- to ensure water doesn't get inside the rock.

"We study meteorites in order to better understand how the solar system formed, how it evolved, how the Earth became such a unique planet in our solar system," said Debaille. "This season's SAMBA mission was a success both in terms of the number and weight of the meteorites we found. Two years ago, we found less than 10kg. This year, we found so much that we had to call the travel agency -- because we had 75kg of meteorites to take home."

Princess Elisabeth Antarctica is the world's first zero emission polar research station, and is operated by the International Polar Foundation, in partnership with the Belgian Polar Secretariat. Princess Elisabeth Antarctica's design and construction seamlessly integrates passive building technologies, renewable wind and solar energy, water treatment facilities, continuously monitored power demand and a smart grid for maximising energy efficiency. Located in East Antarctica's S?r Rondane Mountains, Princess Elisabeth Antarctica welcomes scientists from around the world to conduct research in this little-studied and pristine environment.

The Winner of The Royal Berkshire Poetry Competition 2012

Hosted by Bill Buckley, BBC Radio presenter, the Poetry Raw event for TRBPoetry Competition to announce the 2012 winner was a huge success. Bill?reported the judges all agreed, when a metaphorical gun was held to their heads and they had to choose on a winner, that this was a unanimous decision.

The Last Train

?

I am on a train at night next to a man with a
Timetable tattooed on his arm.
He points at his arm and says, ?We?re late?.
Remain calm, submit to the heat.
Not travelling but entombed
In a wash of words, noise and sweat.
Swimming in brown grease, paper and meat.
A cold coffee cup slips around our feet.
Broken newspapers yellow in neon light
As the train fills with mad dogs, big sticks and cold eyes.
Whispers and texts,
Whispers and texts.

I am on a train at night.
Next to a woman with useless shopping.
She points at her bags and says ?I couldn?t resist?
And we celebrate this.
Fusing like broken microchips,
Basking in the smell of burning plastic.
The rustle of sales and shops and bliss
Fusing like the sparks of wheel and rust.

Commuting into dust
As signals crack and click and fail.

6 and 9 to 17
Rusted through red railings.

Oil black stones and coffee cups.
Whispers and texts,
Whispers and texts.

Steps To Make Your Online Marketing A Success - Empower Network

What a time to start! More than likely, you have many questions about how and where to get started. The tips below provide some great advice that will help you achieve your affiliate marketing goals.

TIP! Researching affiliate companies is important even if they are one of the most profitable in the industry. You can most likely market it without any issues.

Social media is a great way to grab Google?s attention. Google places a high value on social media sites and will rank your site higher if you have new relevant content. Twitter, Facebook, Digg and other social media and bookmarking sites provide links to popular pages, helping them get indexed faster and more often by Google.

Use banners sparingly. Doing so makes your site looj cheap and unprofessional. Make sure that there is an abundant amount of content on your website. Design your website so that when someone visits it, their attention is immediately focused on the content, and not the banners.

Keep your intended audience in mind as you decide which affiliates to join. If your niche is selling high fashion shoes, there is no reason to affiliate with advertisers who sell laundry detergent. If your visitors click on your site thinking ?fancy clothes,? then they expect to see fancy clothes. Keep your target audience in mind when choosing ads.

TIP! Consider a unique niche for more affiliate marketing opportunities. Specialty niches are usually more profitable because you have few competitors and your unique products attract a lot of targeted traffic.

You?ll want to know how orders not processed on your affiliate company?s website are tracked. You need to ensure that you get credit for any phone or mail orders your customers make. Otherwise you won?t get paid for them.

To improve as an affiliate marketer, set small goals for each day. This particular item shows you what you still have to complete, which can better motivate you.

TIP! It?s a good idea to take advantage of affiliate networks as a means to improve your affiliate marketing. Affiliate networks are very useful and connect webmasters with high-quality advertisers.

Daily communication is the key for a binding and beneficial relationship among affiliate partners. Frequent communication works as a way to protect your affiliate revenue stream. Your best affiliate partners are irreplaceable, and you should do what?s necessary to maintain good relations with them.

To increase your profits from affiliate programs, write inviting product reviews that include visually appealing elements like videos, photos and screenshots. Appealing visuals help make your product more attractive to potential buyers. Always offer lots of details in your reviews. People are interested in learning about products they buy.

TIP! Make sure you are one up on your competition by building a solid Google Plus following. If you tell your current social network about your new Google Plus account, you?ll find many are already signed up there and your following will grow quickly.

Craft your newsletter well, so people will want to become a part of your mailing list. The novelty of simply receiving any email at all wore off a decade ago. Most internet users tend to protect their addresses from promotional offers and spam. Make sure your newsletter is not perceived as such.

Work with companies that provide multiple types of payment options. There are companies that will only send you your money after you have earned a specific amount; however, other companies give you access to your bank via e-wallet features such as AlertPay and PayPal.

TIP! Don?t allow your affiliate marketing campaign to rest on a few partner?s shoulders. It?s best to work with a variety of products and vendors.

It is a good idea to explain to your readers that you are an affiliate marketer to your customers so as to establish trust. Honesty will bring you the best results in your marketing efforts. Your customers should understand why you market certain goods. If they do, they are more likely to buy them.

Boost the sales of your products and services through a special, affiliate-focused website. Presenting your affiliates professionally and positively will convince other affiliates to join you. If you implement SEO on your website effectively, you may even draw in affiliates who do not know anything about your product.

TIP! Use positive language to help market your product. Phrases that could be perceived as negative should be changed.

It will likely take you a decent bit of time to discover which affiliate advertisements have been the most effective for your particular demographic. You will have to tailor your approach to advertisement depending on your audience and products. Perhaps an unobtrusive ad is better than a flashy one for your audience. Your target audience should always be the driving force when you decide which products you wish to sell.

Experiment with secret links. There are certain ways you can embed affiliate links throughout your articles and other content without being obnoxious or blatant about it. Use these to keep the article aesthetically pleasing, but let the readers know and don?t attempt to trick them into clicks. When your readers know what they are going to be visiting, they will be more likely to click on your links.

TIP! Keep in mind that pay-per-sale plans are a risky affiliate strategy. If things do work out, it could provide a fairly decent income.

After you have decided which products to sell for your online marketing program, you will want to design your marketing strategy to target the right audience for each product. If it?s a cheaper product, then just simply having a high traffic flow will ensure that it sells. If it?s cheap enough, people will be more likely to buy it after a quick click and view. The more expensive a product is, the more it relies upon focused, intense selling techniques.

These steps should have put you on the road to success. If you thought you knew a lot previously, you will probably feel like you?re at an expert level now. Apply the advice in this article to get started with online marketing as it applies to your website.

Contaminated diet contributes to exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals: Phthalates and BPA

Feb. 27, 2013 ? While water bottles may tout BPA-free labels and personal care products declare phthalates not among their ingredients, these assurances may not be enough.

According to a study published February 27 in the Nature Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, we may be exposed to these chemicals in our diet, even if our diet is organic and we prepare, cook, and store foods in non-plastic containers. Children may be most vulnerable.

"Current information we give families may not be enough to reduce exposures," said Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana, lead author on the study and an environmental health pediatrician in the UW School of Public Health and at Seattle Children's Research Institute. She is a physician at Harborview Medical Center's Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, and a UW assistant professor of pediatrics.

Phthalates and bisphenol A, better known as BPA, are synthetic endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Previous studies have linked prenatal exposure to phthalates to abnormalities in the male reproductive system. Associations have also been shown between fetal exposure to BPA and hyperactivity, anxiety, and depression in girls.

The researchers compared the chemical exposures of 10 families, half of whom were given written instructions on how to reduce phthalate and BPA exposures. They received handouts prepared by the national Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units, a network of experts on environmentally related health effects in children. The other families received a five-day catered diet of local, fresh, organic food that was not prepared, cooked or stored in plastic containers.

When the researchers tested the participants' urinary concentrations of metabolites for phthalates and BPA, they got surprising results. The researchers expected the levels of the metabolities to decrease in those adults and children eating the catered diet.

Instead, the opposite happened. The urinary concentration for phthalates were 100-fold higher than the those levels found in the majority of the general population. The comparison comes from a study conducted by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This is a program of studies managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States.

The concentrations were also much higher for children as compared to the adults. The researchers then tested the phthalate concentrations in the food ingredients used in the dietary intervention. Dairy products -- butter, cream, milk, and cheese -- had concentrations above 440 nanograms/gram. Ground cinnamon and cayenne pepper had concentrations above 700 ng/g, and ground coriander had concentrations of 21,400 ng/g.

"We were extremely surprised to see these results. We expected the concentrations to decrease significantly for the kids and parents in the catered diet group. Chemical contamination of foods can lead to concentrations higher than deemed safe by the US EPA," said Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana.

Using the study results, the researchers estimated that the average child aged three to six years old was exposed to 183 milligrams per kilogram of their body weight per day. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's recommended limit is 20 mg/kg/day.

"It's difficult to control your exposure to these chemicals, even when you try," said Sathyanarayana. "We have very little control over what's in our food, including contaminants. Families can focus on buying fresh fruits and vegetables, foods that are not canned and are low in fat, but it may take new federal regulations to reduce exposures to these chemicals."

The other researchers in the study included Garry Alcedo (Seattle Children's Research Institute), Brian E. Saelens and Chuan Zhou (UW Department of Pediatrics, Seattle Children's Research Institute), Russell L. Dills and Jianbo Yu (UW Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences) and Bruce Lanphear (BC Children's Hospital and Simon Fraser University).

Their paper is titled, "Unexpected results in a randomized dietary trial to reduce phthalate and bisphenol A exposure."

The study was supported through by the Center for Ecogenetics and Environmental Health in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences in the UW School of Public Health. A grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health provides major support for the center.

Coming this summer: Plummeting phablet prices

Phablet Prices PlummetSamsung Galaxy S III

Samsung (005930) stared down an army of critics when it launched the Galaxy Note in 2011. The 5.3-inch screen was viewed with deep suspicion by many industry experts. By August 2012, Samsung had sold 10 million units. Now the handset industry is set to face the onslaught of an armada of copycats. Huawei?s Ascend P2. ZTE?s Grand Memo. UMI?s X2. HTC?s (2498)?One. Sony?s (SNE)?Xperia ZL. And on and on. These smartphones all have display sizes ranging from 4.7 inches to 5.7 inches, and most of them are fairly close copies of the Note concept.

[More from BGR: Report outlines ?5 biggest problems facing Apple?]

The handset market often gets flooded with a glut of models when a new technology or a design approach starts to get trendy. It happened with the first generation of 256-color displays more than a decade ago; and with the massive waves of first 1.3-megapixel camera phones and then 5-megapixel camera phones; and with touchscreen phones in 2008, a year after the first iPhone became a sensation.

[More from BGR: Apple eyes intuitive iPhone features with new ?situational awareness? tech]

But what may be different this time around is that there is considerable doubt about the grace period of premium pricing. A decade or even five years ago, handset vendors tried to hold the line on pricing when it came to new product niches. Relatively high-end vendors like Nokia (NOK), Motorola and Sony Ericsson had enough clout with operators to keep the overall pricing environment relatively benign.

In 2013, the handset market looks radically different. Low-end vendors from Asia have far more clout and their power is growing rapidly. Huawei?s global smartphone market share has already hit 5%. A trio of low-end Asian vendors tripled their smartphone market share in urban India between June and December, reaching 12%. ZTE is making major inroads in Western Europe. Latin America is getting flooded by budget brands from Spice to Micromax.

This time around, there may not be much time for high-end vendors to capitalize on the growing popularity of smartphones equipped with 5- to 6-inch displays. Micromax is already selling a 5-inch phone in India for under $220. UMI is now launching its X2 model with an ambitious 13-megapixel camera?at $260. The quality of phones from budget vendors has improved radically over the past three years, partly because phones can now be designed so easily from off-the-shelf component suites. Nobody needs advanced in-house antenna design anymore.

This sheer number of jumbo smartphones is intimidating also because nobody really knows how great the demand is. Samsung?s?Galaxy Note models did great business in 2012 partly because there was very little competition. The fact that Samsung managed to sell more than 15 million phablets in a year does not mean that the global market can absorb a dozen new models in the same category ? particularly if Apple debuts an iPhone with 4.8-inch screen in early summer.

The industry clearly underestimated the demand for phablets in 2011 and 2012. If the past is any indication, it will now cheerfully swing to overestimating phablet demand in 2013. Once all these models ramp up over the spring, we are likely to witness truly eye-popping prices over the summer ? unless the overall consumer demand really shifts decisively towards the phablet. As cool as a 5-inch display looks, it is hard to envision it as the dominant form factor.

Lee Chong Wei wants to start a national junior level tournament to find talented young shuttler

Lee Chong Wei, Malaysia?s best ever shuttler in Men?s Singles category, intends to start a national tournament with the name of Lee Chong Wei Cup in order to find young and talented players from all over the country.

The World Number One Chong Wei has been lifting Malaysian flag at international tournaments for the last many years. However, there is no other Malaysian badminton player in Men?s Singles category who could become a worth replacement to Chong Wei at the moment.

This is the major reason that Chong Wei wants to start a new tournament by the assistance of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) which will help in hunting talent from all corners of the country. It will certainly help in eliminating the dearth of quality shuttlers in Malaysia in Men?s Singles category.

As stated in www.newsbadminton.com, Chong Wei said, Chong Wei said, ?It is my dream to see another Chong Wei groomed in this country before I retire. Together with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), I plan to host the Lee Chong Wei Cup?.

Chong Wei also added, ?It will be good if I can start it later this year or early next year. And I want it to be an annual affair. I want it to be held in every state. Currently, in our academy there are not many singles players coming through and that is a real concern for me.?

In Men?s Singles category, only Chong Wei is in the top-10 slot in the world rankings and it is quite alarming that there will be no Malaysian shuttler who could challenge the world after Chong Wei?s retirement which is quite near.

The World Number One has been dominating the international stage because of his untiring effort in training sessions. He is one of the most dedicated and hard working athletes in the world and no other Malaysian shuttler is even close to him in all aspects of the game.

However, Chong Wei wants young shuttler to continue his legacy at international stage and the Lee Chong Wei Cup will provide a platform for junior shuttlers to prove their worth and get into the national squad of Malaysia.

After 7-week struggle, Hagel poised for defense job

Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

Former Senator Chuck Hagel.

By Tom Curry, National Affairs Writer, NBC News

Chuck Hagel?s seven-week struggle to win confirmation as secretary of defense appears near the end with an expected Senate vote Tuesday on his nomination.

President Barack Obama?s choice to run the Pentagon is expected to win confirmation since a few Republicans announced that they?ll join Senate Democrats in voting for him.

The vote would put an end to a rocky nomination process that came after Hagel?s GOP foes succeeded in delaying the confirmation.

Lead opponent, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, insinuated two weeks ago that Hagel might have given as-yet undisclosed speeches to ?extreme or radical groups? or received money from foreign sources or from defense contractors in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

But Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., rebuked the latter saying Hagel complied with the committee?s financial disclosure requirements and deserved confirmation.

Last week 15 GOP senators asked Obama to withdraw Hagel?s nomination, but it was clear that not enough Republican senators would vote to further delay Hagel?s confirmation by extended debate or filibuster.

The former Nebraska Republican senator turned against his party by campaigning for Democratic Senate candidate Bob Kerrey in Nebraska last year.

He?d also harshly criticized President George W. Bush after the Iraq war became unpopular in 2006, suggesting at one point that Bush might be impeached. These remarks made him popular with Democrats but something of a pariah in his own party.

Recommended:?Obama tells govs to push Congress to avert automatic cuts

The antagonism of Cruz and several other Republican senators turned to disdain once Hagel testified before the Armed Services Committee last month. Hagel was forced to amend or retract comments he?d made about Iran, Israel and other matters.

NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro report Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel may finally get the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster and be confirmed next week.

At one point during his confirmation hearing, when discussing U.S. policy toward Iran?s efforts to build nuclear weapons, Hagel said, ?I?ve just been handed a note that I misspoke and said I supported the president?s position on ?containment.? If I said that, I meant to say that obviously ? his position on containment ? we don?t have a position on containment.?

Levin intervened: ?Just to make sure your correction is clear, we do have a position on containment ? which is we do not favor containment.?

?It was the most unimpressive performance that I have seen in watching many nominees who came before the committee,? said Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain, a Hagel opponent.

Related: What problems will Hagel inherit at Department of Defense?

But Democrats on the panel repeatedly praised Hagel for having served in combat in Vietnam.

From the beginning, Obama portrayed Hagel as a man who was ideally qualified to head the Defense Department because, as the president said when announcing the nomination, he ?knows that war is not an abstraction. He understands that sending young Americans to fight and bleed in the dirt and mud, that?s something we only do when it?s absolutely necessary.?

In presenting Hagel as his pick, Obama declared that ?Chuck represents the bipartisan tradition that we need more of in Washington.?

Obama said that he was courageous and independent in his views ?and that?s exactly the spirit I want on my national security team, a recognition that when it comes to the defense of our country, we are not Democrats or Republicans; we are Americans.?

But Republicans such as Cruz said Hagel was not up to the job of running the Pentagon. Cruz went so far as to argue that Hagel, if confirmed, would ?make military conflict in the next four years substantially more likely? because his views on negotiating with Tehran would encourage the Iranians to accelerate their nuclear weapons development program.

Robbie Lawler?s ground and pound gives him UFC 157 upset win over Josh Koscheck

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Robbie Lawler came back to the UFC with a big win as he knocked out Josh Koscheck on Saturday at UFC 157.

Koscheck used wrestling early on to control Lawler, but it backfired. Lawler took top position and then unleashed a bevy of punches on Koscheck until the fight was stopped at 3:57.

?I felt so good tonight; I?m not surprised it went that way. It wasn?t easy, but it wasn?t hard, either. I hit him very hard, the referee was right to stop it. I whacked him, man. Hard! He was doing nothing but laying down taking big shots," Lawler said after the fight.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

This was Lawler's first fight in the UFC since 2004. He fought as a middleweight in Strikeforce for many years, but returned to the UFC as a welterweight. The smaller weight class suited him, and he picked up his 20th win on Saturday night.

For Koscheck, it's his second loss in a row. He once fought Georges St-Pierre for the welterweight title, but is 2-2 since losing to GSP. At 35 years old, it will be tough for the NCAA Division I champ at Edinboro to return to the top of his division.

LG Optimus F7 and F5 handson midrange devices for first time LTE users

After a couple of leaks last week all but completely unveiled the Optimus F7 and F5 to the general public, LG's made the devices official today at MWC 2013. The two handsets are part of the company's mid-range line, devised as a bridge for users crossing over from aging 3G networks to LTE. But that's not all the 4.7-inch F7 and 4.3-inch F5 have in common. Both run Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 (skinned) and pack a dual-core setup, 8GB of internal storage, 1.3-megapixel front facing camera and LG's suite of custom software. Of course, there are bound to be significant differences between the two, so follow along as we dive into our initial impressions.

Ski. Acosta Wins GS; Lobos Move to Fifth Place at RMISA Championships/NCAA Regionals

RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regionals Results - Day 2 Get Acrobat Reader

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- For the second year in a row, Chris Acosta is an RMISA/NCAA West Regionals champion as the Lobo senior won today's giant slalom event in Bozeman, Mont. Acosta, a native of Ashland, Wisc., won the slalom at last year's Regionals. It's his second victory in 2013 and his third of his career.

The Lobos moved up one spot and sit in fifth after the second day of competition. New Mexico has 523 points and sits ahead of Alaska-Anchorage, who has 477.

Colorado leads all teams with 711 points, Utah is second with 625 and Denver is third with 616. Montana State sits within reach of the Lobos in fourth with 550 points.

"I am very happy for Chris Acosta who had an awesome race today," head coach Fredrik Landstedt said. "It was a little bit better day for the Nordics and we had some other great results for the Alpine team."

Nordic events concluded on Saturday with a 15/20K mass-start freestyle race. The RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regionals conclude tomorrow with the slalom.

Alpine - Giant Slalom

Acosta propelled a second-place finish by the Lobo men in the giant slalom. UNM's women finished third and collectively, New Mexico was second in the giant slalom.

Michael Bansmer was the Lobos' second point placer as he finished seventh. The sophomore had the fastest time of the field for the second run.

Sean Horner was next and finished 18th. Joonas Rasanen, Mark Miller and Juho-Pekka Penttinen also raced and placed 20th, 21st and 30th, respectively.

Sophomore Mateja Robnik led the Lobo women and earned her first podium finish in RMISA competition as she finished third. Seniors Kate Williams and Mary Rachel Hostetter placed 11th and 18th to round out UNM's scoring.

Freshman Courtney Altringer finished 25th.

Nordic - 15/20K Mass-Start Freestyle

Mats Rudin Resaland led all Nordic Lobos on Saturday as he placed sixth in the men's 20K mass-start freestyle. The sophomore finished the course in 59:21.1.

Junior Christian Otto and senior Eivind Odden Solberg were the other two Lobos that competed. Otto placed 22nd (1:03:07.5) and Solberg finished 27th (1:09:29.6).

Sophomore Clara Chauvet led the Nordic Lobo women with an 11th-place finish, completing the 15K mass-start freestyle in 53:23.9. Senior Linn Havelsrud Klaesson was 14th (54:46.6) and junior Anita Kirvesniemi was 23rd (57:39.3) to round out UNM's scoring. Senior Ingrid Leask finished the course in 1:00:08.2 and placed 26th.

"Mats had a real shot at the podium but fell one kilometer from the finish," Landstedt said. "Clara finished in ninth but got a 15 second penalty for skiing out of the trail for a few yards and was moved down to 11th. She skied a good race, and Linn also had a better race today."

CNET: How Microsoft can avoid the pitfalls of Sony's PS4 announcement

How Microsoft can avoid the pitfalls of Sony's PS4 announcement

Microsoft now has last licks at debuting the company's Xbox 360 successor. Here's how it can avoid a lukewarm reception.

Press events are a tricky beast. No one ever said they were easy to pull off. But with Sony casting the first stone in the next-generation console gaming war, Microsoft can learn a lot from what worked and what didn't.

When the lights went up, Sony execs were shaking hands and congratulating each other. But the packed house at the Hammerstein Ballroom wasn't exactly participating in the same adulation. Instead, it was left with a heap of unanswered questions, most notably the lack of physical hardware and a price tag.

By now it's safe to assume Microsoft will strike back with an event of its own, possibly before the company's E3 2013 press conference. If that's the case, one-upping Sony's coming out party shouldn't be much of an issue.

Here's what Microsoft can do:

Give us a box and give us a price
This one's a no-brainer. Sure, the PS4 and next Xbox will most likely just be a box, not much different than the PS3 or Xbox 360. But I think some critics who've downplayed the absence of a physical console might be forgetting that the box itself can be news, too. What if it's shockingly small? What if there's some sort of functionality built into the casing the likes of which we've yet to see so far in the industry?

Let's also not forget about the branding side of things. For all intents and purposes, the Sony event was made to be the PS4's coming out party. This was to be the world's first exposure to the future of PlayStation. For a presentation to carry that kind of weight, some sort of symbol must be attached to that tentpole event.

Keep in mind, Wednesday night's event was attended by press from all around the world who flew into town for 24 hours or less -- all that time and money spent on what was not a whole lot more than a series of trailers. Even if it were nothing more than a hollowed-out plastic mold, I do believe there'd be a much greater sense of satisfaction throughout the industry. If this wasn't meant to be that kind of party, then Sony should not have gone through with it.

Don't spend a lot of time on the specs
Specs and numbers are all fine and good, but they mean next to nothing to the average gamer. Sure, developers care about specs but they already know what's packed inside the thing because they've been working with it for months.

Telling the world that your new console is jam-packed with 8GB of RAM is like prefacing a concert with a detailed description of what kind of guitar pedals are going to be used in the performance. There's a time and a place for these kinds of things. Don't get me wrong, I understand that there's an audience that cares about specs, but do a better job of explaining how these specs will directly benefit the end user.

Microsoft needs to make an event directed at consumers because they are the people who need to be won over. Accomplish that and you're already ahead of the game.

Don't tell; Show
A lot of high-concept and lofty aspirations were tossed around on Wednesday night, specifically in the realm of real-time streaming and social connectivity. That's great, but Sony should have created some kind of real-world demonstration to help better get some points across. Even if all that entailed a prerecorded video, it would have given the audience a clearer understanding of what kind of social and cloud-based functionality the PS4 will possess.

Sony spent a while talking up how seamless and intuitive these ultra-ambitious features were going to be, yet we all left that event without any idea of how exactly it was going to work.

We were also never properly introduced to the PS4's interface. There were glimpses of it during the video-sharing segments, but a brief tour really would have been beneficial and provided a better understanding of what the next PlayStation is going to feel like.

Don't repeat anything
With Sony hitting the stage first and bringing along a number of third-party developers to show off their next-generation endeavors, it's eliminated a lot of what Microsoft can do with games that won't be exclusive to the next Xbox. The key here is to avoid repeating any of those presentations. Confirming that these developers have also signed on to support the next Xbox is one thing, but spending the least amount of time on games we've already seen Sony talk about should be a top priority.

Debut a killer app
There wasn't one game exclusive to PS4 that really won the crowd over. Of course, Microsoft won't be able to pull this one out of a hat, but it also shouldn't sit on a killer app, either. If there's a Halo 5 cooking or a new game from Epic in the works, Microsoft should absolutely lead with that.

Microsoft started off the last generation with the majority of blockbuster exclusives, but that trend has been shifting toward Sony for a while. Sony wasn't able to generate buzz around a "must-have" PS4 title, so now it's on Microsoft to see if they can rise to the occasion.

Of course, Microsoft has yet to announce any sort of next-generation Xbox event, but we're still anticipating something soon. As soon as we hear anything we'll be sure to pass that information along and will be on hand if and when it happens.

Regardless, the big winner this week is E3 2013 happening in June. We can all but guarantee both Microsoft and Sony will have new, playable hardware at the big show in Los Angeles, and we'll be there live-blogging and roaming the show floor to bring you the absolute latest.

Fifth Third eliminating city president position, shifting focus in Jacksonville

James Crichlow

Nathaniel Herring

Fifth Third Bancorp is eliminating the position of city president in Jacksonville and is shifting its focus in the North Florida market to include a stronger emphasis on commercial banking.

Reagan Rick, the president and CEO of Fifth Third in Central and North Florida, said that the top local executive position is being eliminated for now, but that it is possible that a commercial president might be appointed in the area in the future. Jacksonville City President Nathaniel Herring will remain in the role until the spring, but Rick said it is not yet known if he will stay with the company in another market.

?We like Nathaniel,? Rick said. ?We?ll see what works for him.?

Herring is a Jacksonville native and has been involved in a number of philanthropic efforts and community organizations since becoming city president in 2008.

?I am at a really unique crossroads working through a dilemma to determine if my passion and interests to stay part of the North Florida business community are equal to, or greater than, my passion to move forward with Fifth Third Bank in other markets,? Herring said.

Rick said that although the bank will continue to focus on all areas of business in Jacksonville, the changes are happening in part because of the strong growth the company has seen in commercial banking both in Jacksonville and system wide, and the opportunities that are still available in the area.

Ex-Canada ambassador slighted by Affleck?s ?Argo?

Associated Press

Former Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor and his wife Pat, pose for photographers at the premiere of the film Argo in Washington. AP File Photo

TORONTO?The Canadian former ambassador to Iran who protected Americans at great personal risk during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis says it will reflect poorly on Ben Affleck if he doesn?t say a few words about Canada?s role if the director?s film ?Argo? wins the Oscar for best picture Sunday.

But Ken Taylor ? who said he feels slighted by the movie because it makes Canada look like a meek observer to CIA heroics in the rescue of six US citizens caught in the crisis ? is not expecting it.

?I would hope he would. If he doesn?t than it?s a further reflection,? Taylor said. ?But given the events of the last while I?m not necessarily anticipating anything.?

Taylor kept the Americans hidden at the embassy in Tehran and facilitated their escape by getting fake passports and plane tickets for them. He became a hero in Canada and the United States after. The role he played in helping the Americans to freedom was minimized in the film.

?In general it makes it seem like the Canadians were just along for the ride. The Canadians were brave. Period,? Taylor said.

Affleck?s thriller is widely expected to win the best-picture trophy. Two other high-profile best-picture nominees this year, Kathryn Bigelow?s ?Zero Dark Thirty? and Steven Spielberg?s ?Lincoln,? have also been criticized for their portrayal of some factual issues.

Affleck said in a statement Friday night he thought his issue with Taylor had been resolved.

?I admire Ken very much for his role in rescuing the six houseguests. I consider him a hero. In light of my many conversations as well as a change to an end card that Ken requested I am surprised that Ken continues to take issue with the film,? he said in a statement. ?I spoke to him recently when he asked me to narrate a documentary he is prominently featured in and yet he didn?t mention any lingering concerns. I agreed to do it and I look forward to seeing Ken at the recording.?

Taylor noted that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter appeared on CNN on Thursday night and said ?90 percent of the contributions to the ideas and the consummation of the plan was Canadian,? but the film ?gives almost full credit to the American CIA.?

Carter also called ?Argo? a complete distortion of what happened when he accepted an honorary degree from Queen?s University in Canada in November.

?I saw the movie Argo recently and I was taken aback by its distortion of what happened because almost everything that was heroic, or courageous or innovative was done by Canada and not the United States,? Carter said.

Taylor said there would be no movie without the Canadians.

?We took the six in without being asked so it starts there,? Taylor said. ?And the fact that we got them out with some help from the CIA then that?s where the story loses itself. I think Jimmy Carter has it about right, it was 90 percent Canada, 10 percent the CIA.?

He said CIA agent Tony Mendez, played by Affleck in the film, was only in Iran for a day and a half.

The movie also makes no mention of John Sheardown, a deputy at the Canadian embassy who sheltered some of the Americans. Taylor said it was Sheardown who took the first call and agreed right away to take the Americans in. Sheardown recently died and his wife, Zena, called the movie disappointing.

Friends of Taylor were outraged last September when ?Argo? debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. The original postscript of the movie said that Taylor received 112 citations and awards for his work in freeing the hostages and suggested Taylor didn?t deserve them because the movie ends with the CIA deciding to let Canada have the credit for helping the Americans escape

Taylor called the postscript lines ?disgraceful and insulting? and said it would have caused outrage in Canada if the lines were not changed. Affleck flew Taylor to Los Angeles after the Toronto debut and allowed him to insert a postscript that gave Canada some credit.

Taylor called it a good movie and said he?s not rooting against it, but said it is far from accurate.

?He?s a good director. It?s got momentum. There?s nothing much right from Day 1 I could do about the movie. I changed a line at the end because the caption at the end was disgraceful. It?s like Tiananmen Square, you are sitting in front of a big tank,? he said.
