Festival-like atmosphere for shuttle Endeavour's Los Angeles move

LOS ANGELES | Sat Oct 13, 2012 1:02pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The retired space shuttle Endeavour was greeted with a festival-like atmosphere in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood on Saturday, where it has paused from its snail-like crawl through narrow city streets towards its new home at a local museum.

Endeavour nosed out of Los Angeles International Airport before dawn on Friday to begin a two-day, 12-mile (19-km) journey atop a massive wheeled transporter to the California Science Center on the edge of downtown.

The shuttle, which flew from 1992 to 2011, will become a tourist attraction at the center. Endeavour was largely built in Southern California and was a workhorse of the U.S. space program, flying 25 missions.

Thousands of area residents, many of whom walked a mile or more to get to where the shuttle was parked outside an arena on Saturday morning, celebrated the icon's visit to their neighborhood with food trucks and music.

Two brothers from the area, German and Joseph Raudales, watched the shuttle with smiles on their faces.

"I'm excited, I want to be an astronaut when I grow up," said 10-year-old Joseph Raudales.

The shuttle is 122 feet long and 78 feet wide and stands 5 stories tall at the tail - which police said makes it the largest object ever to move through Los Angeles. Its combined weight with the transporter is 80 tons.

Organizers say only a few inches separate Endeavour's wings from structures along the route, and workers have felled 400 trees along curbs to clear a path. The science center will plant more than 1,000 trees to make up for their loss.

Some street lights, traffic signals, power poles and parking meters also have been temporarily removed.

OTHER SHUTTLES FIND HOMES

The project to move Endeavour will cost over $10 million, said Shell Amega, a spokeswoman for the science center. Charitable foundations and corporations have donated money and services for the move.

The center beat out a number of other institutions when the U.S. space agency NASA chose it last year as the permanent home for Endeavour, which was taken out of service because of the end of the shuttle program.

Endeavour has hop-scotched across the country from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on the back of a modified Boeing 747. It had been parked at the airport in Los Angeles since arriving on September 21 after a ceremonial piggyback flight around California.

Endeavour was built to replace Challenger, using spare parts from two prior shuttles, according to Ken Phillips, aerospace curator at the science center. Challenger was lost in a 1986 accident that killed seven astronauts.

The shuttle will be displayed in a temporary hangar-style metal structure to protect it from the elements. In 2017, a 200-foot-tall (61-meter) structure will open in which Endeavour will stand vertically, Phillips said.

The other remaining shuttles also have found homes.

The Smithsonian in Washington has Discovery at its Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center museum in Virginia. New York City has the prototype shuttle Enterprise at its Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. And the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral has Atlantis, which the center will move to an on-site visitors complex next month.

The Scene to be Green - Property Report

It was only a matter of time before Singapore caught the attention of the hosts of 100 % Design 2012. This year was the inaugural event in Singapore, and after personally attending the event, something tells

me it won?t be the last.

Being held right next door to South East Asia?s leading exhibition for green building ? BEX Asia 2012, provided a perfect collaboration of creativity, technology and forward thinking with 100% Design 2012.?BEX Asia 2012 covered everything from green infrastructure and energy saving capabilities to space saving. Companies flew in from all around the world to demonstrate their work and reveal the latest?technology. Terence Tan, director of Johnson Controls, who is paving the way with its forward thinking green initiatives, explained: ?As humans, we?re getting smarter so that should reflect in our technology,? he told me. Veera, managing director at Greenology PTE LTD, agreed and was proud to display examples of his work. Metres of green and colourful strips decorate his stand ? a display of what he has coined GVG (Greenology Vertical Greenery). The vertical greenery that you see in terminals 1 through to 3 at Changi Airport is Veera?s handiwork. Perfect for space saving in countries such as Singapore where space is of the essence.

But it was not just BEX Asia 2012 that is concerned with space saving; next-door at 100% Design 2012, interior designers, furniture designers and high-end furnishings companies from around the globe also flew in to showcase their talents. The furniture design at Spaceman, for example, offered an interesting take on space saving ? even offering a sofa bed/bunk bed among its many solutions. There were many more fancy installations to catch my eye, such as Design Intervention i.d?s creative inventions and the thick, luscious carpets at Four-O-Nine?s stand that combine design and luxury seamlessly. It?s no wonder that joint founders and creative directors Lukasz B. Kos and Andrei Zerebecky are anticipating the future ? given the positive response they had at the show. ?We have had some big hotel brands contact us on the back of this show,? said Zerebecky. ?And we could even have an order already.?

Singapore, with its strategic location and plethora of luxury hotels is increasingly becoming a hub for MICE events and although this was 100% Design?s first year in the Lion State, it did not fail to impress. Here in Singapore, it?s not just the scene to be seen, it?s the scene to be green.

How To Use Your Psychic Powers To Sell More Products | Content ...

Author: George W. Hutton | Total views: 60 Comments: 0
Word Count: 743 Date:

Rapport is essential to all sales. Without rapport, you are only going to sell things to people who are already desperate to buy it. But with rapport, you'll be able to explain exactly why your product is the best one available. And with strong enough rapport, your customer will believe you, and buy the product.

A great way to create rapport in a face to face sales meeting is through pacing. This means matching whatever they do. Match their body language. Match their rate of speech. If they move, you move. If they tilt their head, you tilt your head. This is incredibly powerful. You can walk through any cafe and quickly tell who's in rapport, and who isn't. Who's into each other, and who secretly wants to slap each other across the face.

How do you do this online? You can easily do this the same way. Just simply write what you know to be true in the mind of your reader. That way, the more they read, the more they'll say, "uh huh...uh huh..." to themselves over and over. So when you start describing your product, they'll be much more likely to follow along and click that magical "buy" button at the bottom.

How do you do this? With your psychic powers, of course!

Wait, what?

OK. This may upset some of you. If you truly believe in psychic powers, maybe you should read another article at this point.

Still here? Good.

There's something people use that is called "cold reading." It's a way to make it seem like you have a psychic view into their brain. But in reality, it's just some very accurate guesswork, coupled with some artfully vague language.

For example, pay close attention to the following sentence:

You are reading this sentence.

Pretty amazing, huh? I knew exactly what you were doing as you read that!

But wait, there's more.

Consider this:

You are reading this sentence, and maybe wondering how you can use this.

Wow, how did I do that?

First, I made a statement I knew had to be true. Then I made a guess about what you were thinking. And I prefaced that statement, about what you were thinking, with the word, "maybe."

Of course, I don't know much more about you. All I know is that you are reading this article. I don't know where you came from, who you are, what you want, or what you're interested in.

But if you've any kind of sales page, and you are getting any kind of targeted traffic, then you can deduce quite a bit about your readers. Do some digging, find out things about them that are very likely to be true. Throw in lots of words like, "maybe, perhaps, possibly," and write a couple paragraphs in the first part of your sales letter that pace their experience as much as possible.

Remember to only write things that have a very high probability of being true.

For example, if you have a site on "dog training," and you aren't sure what kind of specific training they're after, don't write anything too specific.

For example, consider this:

I know you've come to this site because you've got that cute poodle with the pink highlights that you'd like to train how to sit up and spin in circles whenever you wag those chocolate flavored dog biscuits in front of her.

It won't work very well.

But consider this:

I know you've got a dog you'd like to train. Maybe you've looked at some other material for help, but up to now you haven't found anything that's satisfied what you really need. Obviously, you have some specific things you'd like your dog to do. And you're not exactly sure how to train your dog to do those things. But with the training I provide, many of our customers report amazing results. Results they say they couldn't get anywhere else.

See how that works? Vague enough to be true for a lot of people. And it leads right into why your product is the best.

It's almost like you're reading their mind!

If you need persuasive sales copy that will quickly move your readers to action, then head on over to our landing page today. You'll find affordable sales copy that will quickly pay for itself. The sooner you get sales copy on your site, the sooner you'll start making increased conversions and sales.
