(AP) ? The NATO airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers lasted almost two hours and continued even after Pakistani commanders had pleaded with coalition forces to stop, the army claimed Monday in charges that could further inflame anger in Pakistan.

NATO has described the incident as "tragic and unintended" and has promised a full investigation.

Unnamed Afghan officials have said that Afghan commandos and U.S. special forces were conducting a mission on the Afghan side of the border and received incoming fire from the direction of the Pakistani posts. They responded with airstrikes.

Ties between Pakistan and the United States were already deteriorating before the deadly attack and have sunk to new lows since, delivering a major setback to American hopes of enlisting Islamabad's help in negotiating an end to the 10-year-old Afghan war.

Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said the Pakistani troops at two border posts were the victims of an unprovoked aggression. He said the attack lasted almost two hours and that commanders had contacted NATO counterparts while it was going on, asking "they get this fire to cease, but somehow it continued."

The Pakistan army has previously said its soldiers retaliated "with all weapons available" to the attack.

The poorly defined, mountainous border has been a constant source of tension between Pakistan and the United States. NATO officials have complained that insurgents fire from across the frontier, often from positions close to Pakistani soldiers who have been accused of tolerating or supporting the militants. NATO and Afghan forces are not allowed to cross over into Pakistan in pursuit of militants.

Saturday's strikes have added to popular anger in Pakistan against the U.S.-led coalition presence in Afghanistan. Many in the army, parliament, general population and media already believed that the U.S. and NATO are hostile to Pakistan and that the Afghan Taliban are not the enemy.

By claiming it was the victim of unprovoked aggression, the Pakistan army is strengthening this narrative.

While the United States is widely disliked in Pakistan, the army has accepted billions in American aid over the last 10 years in return for its cooperation in fighting al-Qaida. It has been accused of fomenting anti-American sentiment in the country to extract better terms in what is essentially a transactional and deeply troubled relationship with Washington.

Saturday's deadly incident also serves to shift attention away from the dominant perception of the Pakistani army in the West over the last five years ? that of an unreliable ally that supports militancy. That image was cemented after al-Qaida's chief Osama bin Laden was found to have been hiding in an army town close to the Pakistani capital when he was killed.

For Pakistan's weak and much criticized elected government, Saturday's airstrikes provide a rare opportunity to unite the country and a momentary relief from attack by rivals eyeing elections in 2013 or sooner.

By contrast, deaths of soldiers and civilians in attacks by militants, some with alleged links to the country's spy agencies, are often greeted with official silence.

Abbas dismissed Afghanistan's claims that the joint Afghan-NATO troops were fired upon first.

"At this point, NATO and Afghanistan are trying to wriggle out of the situation by offering excuses," he said. "Where are their casualties?"

Abbas said the two military posts, named "Volcano" and "Golden," were located on a ridge in Mohmand region around 300 yards (meters) from the border with Afghanistan. He said their exact location had been provided to NATO and that the area had recently been cleared of militants.

Hours after the attack on Saturday, Pakistan closed its western border to trucks delivering supplies to NATO troops in Afghanistan, demanded that the U.S. abandon an air base inside Pakistan used to operate drone strikes, and said it will review its cooperation with the U.S. and NATO.

However, a complete breakdown in the relationship between the United States and Pakistan is considered unlikely. Pakistan relies on billions of dollars in American aid, and the U.S. needs Pakistan to push Afghan insurgents to participate in peace talks.

After the bin Laden raid, ties almost collapsed but slowly resumed, albeit at a lower level and with lower expectations on the American side.

A year ago, a U.S. helicopter attack killed two Pakistani soldiers posted on the Afghan-Pakistani border, prompting the army to close one of the border crossings. A joint investigation by the two nations found that Pakistani troops had fired first at the U.S. helicopters. The investigation found that the shots were probably meant as warnings after the choppers passed into Pakistani airspace. The U.S. apologized, and the border was reopened.

Mice with fewer insulin-signaling receptors don't live longer

Thursday, November 24, 2011

Scientists studying longevity thought it might be good to lack a copy of a gene, called IGF1 receptor, that is important in insulin signaling. Previous studies showed invertebrates that lacked the copy lived longer, even if their bodies were less responsive to insulin, the hormone that lowers blood sugar.

A new study from The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio challenges this. Knocking out one copy of the gene failed to increase the life span of male mice, and it only modestly increased the life span of female littermates.

Martin Adamo, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry, and Arlan Richardson, Ph.D., professor of cellular and structural biology, lead the laboratories that conducted the study. "Our data show insufficiency of this insulin-signaling gene does not produce a robust increase in life span as previously reported in invertebrates," Dr. Richardson said.

Dr. Adamo said: "This demonstrates that reducing insulin signaling through the IGF1 pathway in mammals does not play the same role in aging that is observed in invertebrates."

A receptor is a molecule on a cell's membrane that receives chemical signals. Knocking down the genetic instructions that make IGF1 receptors results in reduced insulin signaling.

The study is described Nov. 23 in the journalPLoS ONE.

Oil near $97 amid light Thanksgiving volume

(AP) ? Oil prices rose slightly to near $97 a barrel Thursday in Asia amid light trading volume ahead of a U.S. holiday.

Benchmark crude for January delivery was up 43 cents at $96.60 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.84 to settle at $96.17 in New York on Wednesday.

Brent crude for January delivery rose 50 cents to $107.52 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

Markets in the U.S. are closed Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Crude has fallen from above $103 last week amid investor concern that Europe's debt crisis will undermine global economic growth and oil demand.

However, crude inventories have dropped in recent months in the U.S. and Europe. Crude supplies fell by 6.2 million barrels last week and are about 8 percent below year-earlier levels, the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said Wednesday.

"The low inventory situation has prevented oil prices from falling sharply," Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a report. "But eventually, deteriorating financial conditions could start to impact economic activity and bring oil prices somewhat lower."

Bank of America said it expects Brent crude to average $104 in the first quarter of next year.

Some analysts predict robust growth in demand for commodities from developing countries will outstrip production capacity increases and push prices higher.

"We believe that the oil market has been too focused on the downside risks to prices and not focused enough on the upside risk should the economy avoid recession," Goldman Sachs said in a report.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose 1 cent to $2.98 per gallon and gasoline futures gained 2.4 cents to $2.54 per gallon. Natural gas was steady at $3.61 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Small plane crashes into mountain east of Phoenix

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (AP) ? A small twin-engine plane crashed into the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix on Wednesday night and there was no apparent sign of survivors, authorities said.

Rescue crews flown in by helicopter to reach the crash site in rugged terrain reported finding two debris field on fire, suggesting that the plane broke apart on impact, the Pinal County sheriff's office said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer says the Rockwell AC69 had just departed from Mesa's Falcon Field when it crashed about 40 miles east of downtown Phoenix. Authorities started getting calls reporting an explosion near the peak of a mountain at about 6:30 p.m.

It was unclear how many passengers were aboard the plane, which was registered to Ponderosa Aviation Inc. in Safford, Ariz. A man who answered the phone Wednesday night at Ponderosa Aviation declined to comment on the crash and refused to identify himself.

Calls to Falcon Field, which mostly serves small, private planes, weren't immediately returned.

Kenitzer said the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board would be investigating the cause of the crash.

Rescue crews who arrived by helicopter reported finding 24-inch tires at the crash site, which would indicate a small twin-engine plane.

Pinal County sheriff's spokeswoman Angelique Graham said people who heard an explosion near the Flat Iron area close to Lost Dutchman State Park.

"People said it sounded like fireworks going off," Graham said.

Some witnesses told Phoenix-area television stations they heard a plane trying to rev its engines to climb higher before apparently hitting the mountains. The elevation is about 5,000 feet at the Superstition Mountains' highest point.

Video showed several fires burning on the mountainside, where heavy brush is common.

The region near Lost Dutchman State Park and the Superstition Wilderness is filled with steep canyons, soaring rocky outcroppings and cactus. Treasure hunters who frequent the area have been looking for the legendary Lost Dutchman mine for more than a century.

Underwater robot learns to swim more like the real thing

Engineers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VirginiaTech) have developed a robot that mimics the graceful motions of jellyfish so precisely that it has been named Robojelly. Developed for the Office of Naval Research in 2009, this vehicle was designed to conduct ocean underwater surveillance, enabling it potentially to detect chemical spills, monitor the presence of ships and submarines, and observe the migration of schools of fish.

Recently, a team at VirginiaTech has improved the performance of this silicone swimmer, enabling it to better overcome the limitations of its artificial skin and better mimic the true motion of a jellyfish. Details on this new design and how it might provide new insights into jellyfish propulsion mechanisms will be presented at the 2011 meeting of the American Physical Society's Division of Fluid Dynamics in Baltimore, Md., Nov. 20-22.

According to VirginiaTech mechanical engineer Alex Villanueva, Robojelly looks very similar to an actual jellyfish. "Its geometry is copied almost exactly from a moon jellyfish [Aurelia aurita]," he said. The robot is built out of silicone and uses shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators to swim.

To move through the water, the natural animal uses the bell section of its body, which deforms and contracts to provide thrust. The lower, or lagging, section of the bell is known as the flexible margin, and it deforms slightly later in the swimming process than the rest of the bell. Until recently, however, Robojelly lacked this crucial piece of anatomy in its design.

Villanueva and his colleagues tested a number of different designs for their robot, some with and without an analog to a flexible margin. Initially, the artificial materials used in construction presented a problem. Unlike their natural counterparts, the artificial materials tended to fold as they deformed, reducing Robojelly's performance.

After testing a number of designs and lengths for the folding margin, the engineers discovered that cutting slots into the bell reduced this unwanted folding effect.

This gave Robojelly a truer swimming stroke, as well as a big boost in speed.

"These results clearly demonstrate that the flap plays an important role in the propulsion mechanism of Robojelly and provides an anatomical understanding of natural jellyfish," said Villanuerva.

The talk, "Effects of a flexible margin on Robojelly vortex structures," is at 3:05 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, in Room 324. Abstract: http://absimage.aps.org/image/MWS_DFD11-2011-001706.pdf

93% 50/50

All Critics (152) | Top Critics (40) | Fresh (142) | Rotten (10)

Still, it's Gordon-Levitt's choices that continue to impress. Sure, he owned one of the most jaw-dropping sequences in last summer's blockbuster Inception. But the actor remains drawn to profoundly human-scale hurts and quiet triumphs.

Gordon-Levitt is an agreeably undemonstrative actor who plays well opposite the burbly Rogen.

Chances are about 90/10 that you'll enjoy 50/50.

Scene by scene, 50/50 can be both amusing and moving, with the tightly wound Gordon-Levitt and the boundaryless Rogen forming an oddly complementary pair. But as a whole the movie never quite coheres.

In other hands, Adam might well be hard to take. But as the comedy in 50/50 turns darker, Gordon-Levitt, who's maybe the most natural, least affected actor of his generation, makes prickly plenty engaging.

An everyman tale with plenty of heart and honesty, the serious subject matter is regularly enlivened with jolts of genuine hilarity, some of it in delightfully questionable taste.

Seth Rogen might be there to puts bums on seats, but it's Joseph Gordon-Levitt who will keep you watching.

It may be a marketing nightmare, but as examinations of mortality go, few come funnier, wiser or more astutely acted.

Whether you're after a comedy-drama about cancer or a Rogen laugh-fest with added heart, this does a remarkable job of balancing the odds.

This is the terminal illness weepie for people who don't watch terminal illness weepies, and it's much the better for it.

It's refreshing to see a movie that embraces the ugly side of what happens to complicated personal relationships. Its quite uncomfortable at times, and the frank exploration of the cancer patient journey makes the comedy even funnier.

It is tough to make a comedy about cancer, since it touches us all. It is not funny. When you have Seth Rogen in a film, however, anything can be funny.

The elements of 50/50 that do work are strong enough to carry the film along and affecting enough to bring losers like me to tears in their cinema seats.

Tackles a distressing subject with a healthy dose of humour, thanks to a sharply observed script, well-rounded, likeable characters, astute direction and a trio of terrific performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anna Kendrick.

There couldn't be a more serious subject, yet Gordon-Levitt and especially Rogen (who co-produced the movie) make the comedy seem both spontaneous and organic.

Nimbly switching gears between heartful drama and uproarious comedy, 50/50 tackles the near-impossible and makes a film about cancer that'll have you crying like a baby one minute and laughing so hard your sides hurt the next.

Jonathan Levine directs a film that may be one of the year's best but still makes one yearn for the serious and uncompromising films of the 1950s and 1960s.

Yes, cancer can be funny. Sort of.

Films about cancer aren't generally this funny. And while this movie isn't a comedy, beyond its generous dose of realistic humour, it has a smart, personal script that dares to face a difficult situation head on.

Life is hard. Cancer is hard. Relationships are hard. Family is hard. '50/50' managed to find the power in all of those things and give us plenty of laughs so we're not simply in a ball crying.

A near-great movie made out of the hardest-to-thread, most oxymoronic genre imaginable - "cancer comedy."

a good movie with a moderate sense of daring that ultimately spends too much time telling the wrong story

With its excellent cast and emotionally intelligent script, 50/50 isn't necessarily a feel good movie about cancer, but is an exceptional telling of one man's story, mixed with a perfect balance of sympathy and laughs.

Interesting commentary on how we deal with difficult situations, and makes a strong case for our desperate need for each other -- especially when the odds are stacked against us.

... surprisingly funny, while also honestly poignant and dramatic.

The nation's weather (AP)

Calmer and drier weather will return to much of California Monday as the low pressure system along the southern California coast moves into Baja California. While a few residual showers are expected in parts of southern California, the brunt of this storm's precipitation will form across the Southwest and the Central Great Basin. Light valley rain and high elevation snow showers will be possible throughout the day. Meanwhile, to the north, a strong frontal system will push into the Pacific Northwest with valley rain, mountain snow, and gusty winds near the coast. Up to 4 to 8 inches of new snow is expected in the Olympics, while up 3 to 6 inches will be possible in the north and central Cascades. A stronger frontal system will move into the Pacific Northwest Monday night and Tuesday with periods of heavy rain, strong winds, and more mountain snow.

In the East, a cold front will become nearly stationary as it extends from the Mid-Atlantic through the Southern Plains with more showers and thunderstorms. The heaviest amounts of precipitation will form near waves of low pressure along the front in the Ozarks and Central Appalachians. There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorm activity from Texas and southern Oklahoma through central Arkansas. The main concerns with these storms are large hail, damaging wind gusts along with isolated tornadoes. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of -13 degrees at Havre, Mont. to a high of 91 degrees at Falfurrias, Texas.

Romney, Huntsman spar over Afghanistan policy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman says the United States has achieved important goals in Afghanistan and that it's time to bring home most of the military forces to focus on rebuilding the American economy.

During the foreign policy debate Tuesday night among GOP candidates for president, Huntsman said he would leave behind as many as 15,000 forces to help Afghans maintain their security.

Huntsman's view is at odds with rival Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor says the United States has a role to help Afghanistan so terrorists don't take control.

Romney also says that the U.S. has a responsibility to finish what it started in Afghanistan.

Nuance Plays Its Cards Right With Swype (The Motley Fool)

The technology segment has never been this exciting. With the launch of upgraded tablets and Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL - News) much-awaited iPhone -- despite the fact that users got the 4S version instead of the promised 5 -- the market has been thrown wide open for newer, better technologies.

One company that has jumped onto the bandwagon is Nuance Communications (Nasdaq: NUAN - News). Nuance, a speech recognition and digital imaging software company, last month acquired its competitor, mobile-tech firm Swype, for $102.5 million. Swype's patented technology, which makes typing on screens of mobile devices, tablets, televisions, and game consoles easier, is expected to boost Nuance's growth.

Profitable nuances
Nuance has been looking to expand aggressively in order to tap into the fast-moving smartphone and tablets market. In the past year, the company has acquired three more businesses, all of which were related to mobile device technologies. In addition to a business partnership with Apple -- iPhone 4S' Siri technology is based on its speech-recognition technology -- Nuance also supports Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG - News) Android-based mobile devices. In fact, Nuance's acquisition has sparked speculation about Google's interest in buying out the company for its speech-recognition technology. According to one analyst, Swype had 15 manufacturing partners and 50 million devices shipped in the last 18 months. The acquisition means that Nuance gets Swype's current business partnerships and much more.

Swype's acquisition is seen as a big move for Nuance, as core speech-recognition technology allows the company to provide raw materials to big players. Potential customers for its latest technology include leading mobile device manufacturers such as Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM - News), Nokia (NYSE: NOK - News), or Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI - News).

Tracing an aggressive growth path
Nuance is leaving no stone unturned in its effort to capture market share in the mobile devices and tablet segment. In line with its expansion plans, Nuance recently partnered with distributor Mindware for the promotion of its products in the Middle East. Investors have been happy with the moves. Since the iPhone 4S was launched, Nuance's stock has risen nearly 15%, recently hitting a 52-week high.

Foolish opinion
Speech technology in mobile and tablet devices promises to be the next big thing in the technology segment. With smart acquisitions, expansion strategies, the right product mix, and big partnerships, Nuance seems to be playing its cards right. In addition, its growth is tied to the progress made in the mobile devices and tablet market, which is only expected to move northward.

Bundesliga referee stable after suicide attempt

updated 6:19 p.m. ET Nov. 19, 2011

COLOGNE, Germany - A referee in Germany's Bundesliga was found bleeding in his hotel bathtub following an apparent suicide attempt hours before he was due to take charge of Saturday's game between Cologne and Mainz.

The game was postponed when Babak Rafati was found in his hotel room earlier Saturday "after sustaining injuries with no sign of any involvement by a third party," Cologne police spokesman Andre Fassbender told The Associated Preess.

"It certainly looks like (a suicide attempt), yes," Fassbender said.

German Football Federation (DFB) president Theo Zwanziger said Rafati's condition was stable but that he would need "intensive treatment" and be hospitalized for some time.

Zwanziger said the referee's three assistants told him that they had tried unsuccessfully to reach Rafati by phone two hours before kickoff to prepare for the match. When he didn't respond to knocks on his door, they got hotel staff to open the door.

Zwanziger said Rafati was "lying in the bathtub and a lot of blood could be seen."

The 41-year-old Rafati has been a referee for the DFB since 1997 and a top-division referee since 2005. He has taken charge of 84 Bundesliga matches and been a FIFA referee since 2008.

Cologne said a replacement referee for Saturday's match could not be found at such short notice.

Indonesia's Lion Air rises from obscurity (AP)

BALI, Indonesia ? A decade ago, Rusdi Kirana sat on the grass at an air show in Britain, eating burgers with his wife. "I didn't know anybody," he says, "and nobody knew me." That will change now that his company, Lion Air, has announced the biggest order ever from Boeing.

The once little-known Indonesian airline says it is planning to buy 230 planes from Boeing Co. The bill ? with a list price of $21.7 billion ? is to be paid over 12 years though bank financing.

Dozens of airlines have emerged in Indonesia since it deregulated its aviation industry in the 1990s, making air travel affordable for the first time for many across the sprawling island nation of 240 million, and luring passengers away from ferries and trains.

Kirana ? a travel agent before he and his brother, Kusnan, pooled $850,000 to start Lion Air in 1999 ? saw the opportunity and jumped.

"Last year we had 21 million passengers, this year I think I can carry 27 million," said the 48-year-old CEO, adding that with plans for an open-sky arrangement in Asia by 2015, a massive Boeing purchase "is not much of a gamble."

Kirana said his company's first plane was a leased Boeing 737-200, which flew from Jakarta to the tiny airport of Pontianak on jungle-clad Borneo island.

"I didn't have any money after that, because it all went to pay for the deposit on the aircraft," he said.

Though the name Lion Air doesn't resonate internationally, it's hardly an unknown, said Peter Harbison, executive chairman of the Sydney-based Center for Asia Pacific Aviation.

"It's operating 67 aircraft at the moment and had 125 on order before this deal," he said, adding with new routes to Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan, it's clear it wants to be a real player in the region as well.

"It's a bet on Asia," Harbison said of the proposal to buy the 230 planes ? most of which are 737 Max, a new version of Boeing's most popular plane with more fuel-efficient engines.

The biggest market for now is home.

The number of air passengers in Indonesia jumped 22 percent from 43 million in 2009 to 53 million in 2010, according to Indonesia's statistics agency.

That trend has continued in 2011.

But the country also has had its share of accidents, raising concerns that the supply of trained aviation professionals, regulatory oversight and ground infrastructure can't keep up with growth.

In 2007, the European Union banned all of Indonesia's 50 airlines from landing on its runways for two years, and Lion Air has not gone unscathed.

In 2004, a Lion Air MD-82 crash-landed at the airport in Surakarta, killing 25 people in its only fatal accident. There also have been scores of other incidents, including hard landings and overshooting runways, some causing injuries or damage to planes.

"Yes, we've had some problems," said Kirana, adding that planes now have equipment that warns pilots when they are flying too high or too fast. "But we're improving."

With 50,000 passengers a day, his bet, he says, is on the future.
